Takaki woke up just fine. No, it hurts.
The bright light of the sun entered his room and met his eyes, causing it to squint a little. He yawned and prayed that maybe, just maybe, this day isn't going to be as bad as it sounds. June 14, 2010
He was thinking that maybe he shouldn't eat, though he's starving already. He was thinking, what if he ditched this day? Just laze around, think happy thoughts, imagine that -she- never existed. She never existed. Yeah right. It would be the hardest thing to imagine.
But then, all good things must come to an end. That is the most horrible truth for Takaki Yuya, well, at least it is. He never knew that their very good relationship will come up to this extent. What the hell. He thought, and he is just the stupidest person in the world to just give up every thing, every thing. But what can he do now? It's all over.
He took a bath, longer than usual, got dressed, longer than usual, or maybe he's doing it on purpose because he doesn't want to start the day.
Yes, he doesn't.
"Will you sing on my wedding?"
"Yes."
As stupid as he is, he said yes. Mother fucking yes. Totally the stupidest answer.
Now what? He's done. Dressed up in his tux, hair glamorously fixed as always, and he is looking more dazzling than ever, but he just doesn't want to go. He doesn't want to step out of his house. Not now. There will be a lot of times he wanted to see her before, but just not now. Not on her wedding day. But he promised.
"Promise?"
"Promise."
He got in his car and drove off.
-
"Yuya, watch out!" She squealed.
Unfortunately, a soccer ball landed on Takaki's face, and she just laughed her ass off.
"Ow! Hey! What's with the laughing!?" He asked, totally annoyed with her laughing.
"Nothing." And she just continued laughing.
"Oi! It's not funny anymore." The guy rubbed his red nose and pouted.
"Hai. Sorry." She giggled.
"Na~ it's alright." He pinched her nose, earning him a soft whack on his arms.
"I told you to get your hands off my face!"
Grumpy, yet his finds it adorable.
-
His house was far from the church, yet the drive felt to short, so fast. Why? He's just halfway there.
There's still an hour and a half before the ceremony starts. Takaki stops in the park where they used to go and he decided to just unwind, let all the tears out until he runs out of it.
"Yes." His stupid answer rang in his head again and he just wanted to suck the guts out of him for saying that.
But after all, he's her best friend. Just a best friend. Always the best friend.
A minute or two, he decided to leave. There's no use of being all sentimental now, it's all over.
-
"Ne, look! That kite is weird."
He chuckles at her childish acts.
"Of course."
"Eh?"
"Not all kites are shaped like diamonds."
"Really? Never thought of that."
"Oh my god. I never thought you're stupider than I am!" He mocked.
"Hey! That's mean! I never get to see kites, you know!" He stuck her tongue out, but hell, she was holding back small stubborn tears.
"Y-ya! Don't cry! I was just joking!"
"I hate you! Don't touch me!" She swatted his hands away.
"I didn't mean it!" And a slap landed on his face.
But he made it up with an ice cream. Because she's shallow like that.
-
He decided to drive slowly, until all the cars took over. He didn't mind. He just doesn't want the time to move. He wanted it to freez, rather.
He saw the big cross getting nearer. He wanted to close his eyes and melt on his spot, he wanted to, but he can't.
"Promise?"
"Promise."
After all, a promise is a promise.
He got out of the car after parking it, straightened his suit and walked towards the church, like he's not hurting himself. Calmly, he approached some friends with a smile, laughed a little, greeted some and he walked in, finally making his way in. His legs quivering, his heart crushed but still beating like hell.
"Takaki! You made it!" Hikaru greeted him.
"Ah, yes." He smiled bitterly.
"I thought you wouldn't come!" The younger boy laughed a little from what he had said.
"Aha, of course I will. It's your wedding day."
Who was he kidding?
-
"Hey, I want to tell you something."
"What?"
"Promise me you won't freak out."
"Yes, dad."
"Dad?!"
"Okay, I was joking Yuuyan."
He dragged her out of the crowd and brought her to the back of the bar, where it's all quiet, where they can be alone.
He finally found the courage and built himself up.
"W-will you-"
"There you are! I was looking for you two!" Hikaru entered the scene, looking all happy, at the same time, nervous. "Ne, will you marry me?"
"H-ha?"
Hikaru slipped a ring on her finger.
"Hi-hikaru I-"
"Just say yes." He grinned. "I love you." Three words. "Will you marry me?"
She was incoherent, her brain loading all of the things the younger boy had just said when she mumbled a 'yes'. She hugged him and cried.
As for Takaki...well, he just stood there.
"What's wrong with you?" Takaki asked her the next day.
"Hm?" Her mouth stuffed with pancakes.
"You ignored me last night. I was supposed to say something."
"Ah~ I was just caught up." But she was smiling, her mouth still full.
"You want to marry him?" There was regret and doubt in his voice.
"I think so." She smiled and blushed.
"You sure?"
"Yes. Well, are you jealous?" She teased.
"No." -Yes.- "I'm happy for you." Lie.
"Really?"
"Yes." No.
"Will you sing on my wedding?"
"Yes."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
-
The orchestra started playing. The priest came in, and there she is, marching on the aisle in the most beautiful gown ever made, smiling as she bowed a little to some people she know.
Stunning.
Takaki found himself going along with the guests. Standing, and listening carefully to what the priest is saying, but it's time for him to sing.
He looked at her first with a faint smile before he turned to the audience. He sang, not because he wanted to do it for his best friend's wedding, but he sang to save himself from humiliation. And he's not going to be as obvious as he can be. It will only hurt on the other party's side.
He hit every note right, with his aching heart on the side, singing along with it.
Why do you have to go away?
But as the song ended, he made sure that she wouldn't fail to catch the tears that came out of his eyes as he smiled to her.
She gave him a shocked look, but she snapped out of it.
Why are you crying, Yuya? she asked herself.
-
He went out of the reception venue to catch some fresh air, if ever there is any. He sat on a bench not far away where he can see the stunning view of the stars in the sky.
"Ne Yuya, what do you think?"
"Eh?"
"How many stars are there?"
"Uh, there are tons of them. Why'd you ask?"
"No reason. They're just too many."
He laughed at the memory, way back when he was 14, she was 13.
The loud playing of the sound system caught Takaki's attention so he decided to head back.
"You many now dance with the newlyweds." The host said and Takaki almost frowned. He knew he'll never get the chance, but he got it wrong.
"Yuya, dance with me." She smiled.
"Yuya, were you crying a while ago?"
"No. Just uh- something got in my eye. An insect maybe."
"No, Yuya. You were perfectly fine when I saw tears coming out of your eyes." She protested, her arms around his neck, his arms around her waist as they dance along with the music filling the event hall.
"Ne."
"Hm?"
"I love you."
"Ha?"
"I love you. Ever since. I was looking for some time to say it, and it was when Hikaru
'proposed' to you. I was going to propose, too but..."
"Yuya are you serious?"
"I am." Takaki took out a ring from his coat pocket. "See?" He let out a laugh. "Guess it's too late. Congratulations by the way. I hope you'll be happy with Hikaru. I'll be going now. It's late. I'm going home back in Osaka. I'll see you soon, ne?" He gave her a kiss on the cheek ; a kiss she got from him, the first and maybe the last.
He let go of his grip on her waist. "Ja~" He smiled before he go, and she was left there standing alone in the middle of the dance floor.
"Hey, anything wrong?" Hikaru approached him.
"Nothing. Yuya left by the way."
"Ah sou~ He didn't even approached me."
"He's going back to Osaka."
"Oh really?"
"I guess it will take a long time before I get to see him again."
"What do you mean?"
"Hikaru..."
"What?"
"Hikaru-"
"..."
"He loves me. He was supposed to propose to me when you proposed to and-"
"Everything's done." He hugged her tightly before she could even finish, earning them cheers from their guests.
Yuya, why?
They reached the hotel where they will be staying. She took out her phone and saw a lonely message.
From : Yuya :)
"I don't want to ruin anything you have with Hikaru. Please pretend that I never said anything."
She wanted to reply, but she doesn't know what to do.
Meanwhile, her phone vibrated. A call.
"Hello?"
"Hello is this Suzuki Reiya?"
"Yes. Who is this?"
"This is Detective Shota. Are you any how related with a man named Takaki Yuya?"
"Yes. Why?"
"We found him here in his car."
"WHAT?!"
"He met an accident. I suppose it was because he was texting while driving. He was clutching on to his phone and I looked for some possible contacts. I saw your number here. I suppose you were the last person he texted."
"I--,"
"Who is he to you?"
"A...friend."
"Ah, can you please send me the number of his parents if you have them? After I dialed you number, the phone died."
"Ah yes."
Reiya sent the number of Takaki's siblings with trembling fingers.
"Why now? Why Yuya, why?" She sobbed.
"Ssh. It's alright." She found herself crying to her husband.
Just now. Why is everything so late, Yuya?
