Foxed!

Jun 06, 2010 05:52

I love foxes, but I truly mostly love them at work. Not here. Yesterday morning, as I was about to go to bed and Aaron and all dogs were inside lounging with me, we heard mad squawking outside. Aaron got to the window first and immediately called Gleann and out the door they went, followed by me and, as far as the door, the hounds.

He actually saw the fox with a hen in his/her mouth! However, the yelling and pursuit was too much and he dropped her. In his chasing around and not finding the fox, Gleann did unfortunately chase the poor traumatized hen as well. Still, she scurried off to hide with the others and later Aaron found her no the worse for wear other than some feather loss.

Gleann ran around. The mighty mare came storming in from her pasture to stomp about the paddock and then apparently to eat the hen's feathers that got dropped in there during the incident. I would not want to be a fox that messed with her. The goats, well, they were eating and barely seemed to notice anything happened. But as Aaron and Gleann were searching for the rest of the chickens, before Aaron asked me to put Gleann in as he wasn't being actually helpful with this, Randvér, seemed to get anxious about all this and came and cuddled me for comfort. Okay, he sort of finds any excuse to glue himself to a person. Elína, on the other hand, just continued to eat.

Aaron found one hen hiding in the mare's barn. The rest had hidden behind the Mini barn and the near victim had joined them after. They nervously let themselves be herded back to the safety of the shop. The old Clucker was still in the shop and, of course, the chicks are still in their now expanded brooder.

So, coywolves and fox invading our yard. We've had fox before, but seldom. I have noticed that there are fewer hare about, I fear we're in for another down cycle that they have something running through them (as they do breed like rabbits). It has seemed that we get huge populations then few then they seem to be all but wiped out every few years. The period of time we have almost none seems to be far longer than when we have them.

I probably should look up what's going on, but...I'm done looking stuff up on this computer for the night. It nearly became a target last night.

So...not a lot of writing, but bits and pieces. I'm in a weird cycle at work where I feel uninspired until just when I have to do my last round....you know, about the time the crows come out. And then I come home and run and eat and get ready for bed. This nocturnal life is not working out so well right now.

As I'm home and have been up all night, I now need to get some hay to the hoofed beasts and NOT let the chickens out yet...not until we've had our run and Aaron and Gleann will be out and about with them. Then get Aaron up so we can all go running. The air is still filled with pollen but no smoke, that we can handle...sort of no choice around here.

Oh, I'm back to weights after a two week "active rest" doing only body weight stuff. Aaron's doing the kettlebell but I'm just not motivated by it, maybe for a later active rest period. I need to get back into shape if I'm going to meet "Sarah" after all! I'm contemplating going to the Chicago ComicCon as much as I want to meet reannon as well, as the friends we hoped to travel with can't make either. It would be enough cheaper, as well as not as hot to travel to (yes, we have AC, but if you have to use AC constantly it's too fucking hot!). And it appears to be just enough smaller as to not be as daunting to this con virgin. Seriously DragonCon is fucking huge! Of course, plans to get to either are being interfered with by Skynet my crappy computer.
