walking back from the coffee shop, i spotted a black cat across the street from my house. small, but with a hoarse meow, it started picking its way across the melting icy street when i called "hi cat." white paws, white chin, no collar, it walked ahead of me to my house, apparently knowing where i live.
the cat stood in front of the screen door, watching it, waiting for me to open it. when i did, the cat slid under the door, putting its front paws on the concrete step before the door. i bent down and picked the cat up, regretting not being able to take it inside. small, but well fed, the cat immediately started purring with its whole body, kneading my arm with its tiny claws. the cat pushed its head forcefully under my arm to force me to pet its head. it reminded me of athena.
i set the cat on the sidewalk, apologizing repeatedly for not being able to take it in (no pet apartment). i worried about whose cat it was, if anyones, as i closed the door behind me, saying my goodbyes.
i watched the cat jump up on the railing of my porch through my window, and it occurred to me, the cat smelled far too good to not have a home.
