As the sun moves higher in the sky, the light that filters through the window of the room slowly brightens. Long-used to rising early to tend to matters at the stable, she's been awake for a while.
This morning, however, she hasn't yet stirred to leave Cuthbert's side-- instead, Susan is quiet, watching him sleep, a soft smile on her face.

However, considering how early he was accustomed to waking in life, late for him still isn't terribly late, so it's not long before he stirs and opens his eyes as well.

Soft and mayhap a little sleepy still, but she's smiling.

Cuthbert lifts himself on one elbow just enough to lean across and kiss her. As he does so, it occurs to him that while he's done this many times already, this is his first time doing it as as a future husband, and there's a smile on his face as he draws back.

"I thought at first when I woke that it must have been a dream, do'ee ken?"
A glance at the ring shining on her finger and she looks back at him, still smiling.

Leaning in again, he brushes his lips lightly across first her lips, and then her forehead. "Love you."

"And we've got a lot to figure out for this to really work, I guess."
Last night, all the doubts and problems that go hand in hand with this were easy to put aside. It would probably be easy to put them aside this morning, as well--but they won't wait forever.

He still tenses.
"I...I talked to him. Night before last."

(I'd not willingly do anything to cause you pain, Roland. You're my oldest friend, and my best friend, and I love you.)
But oh, she does not miss Cuthbert's sudden tension, and her heart sinks within her.
"What-- what did he say?"

Cuthbert rolls on his side to face her--trying, for her sake, to keep the bleakness out of his face and voice.
"He--he said he wouldn't stop me."
A pause.
"No more than that."

Susan closes her eyes and is silent.

"It'll be all right, 'Bert. Somehow. It were-- mayhap it were but the surprise of it?"

"Mayhap. And--as Alain said, he knows we'd never wish to hurt him, and..."
He pauses, and takes a deep breath. "We'll find a way for it to work out. We will."
Reply
"Alain's right, usually. And I'll-- I'll speak with him, too."
