The soft sound of footsteps on grass, and a shadow falls across the fence. A moment later, Alain settles crossed arms on the top rail, leaning against the fence beside her.

Susan shakes her head and pulls the long blade of grass from her mouth, batting at his nose with the soft head at the unchewed end of it.
"I'm fine, say true." Exasperation and affection both are clear. "And thee?"
