I am a fan of Science Fiction and Fantasy
I have traveled to strange, new galaxies, with luggage no more complicated than a towel, riding the waves of awesome technology in a blue police box. I have walked the ley lines of this world and the demon world, with a witch, a fairy and a complicated, conflicted vampire (all bounty hunters) as my companions. I have served with Honor. I have looked up the only wizard listed in the phone book (and kept looking him up, despite disappointment in a not too faithful visual series), and I have been a passenger on a ship of those who make their own rules in the “frontier town” of space. I have journeyed with the slayer from high school and beyond and then further beyond and back again, when only humanity’s flaws put up the biggest fight. Past creatures come through to the present? Sure, I have been there. Voyage frequently do I to the end of the known world, be it for magic stones, friendship, self-discovery or heroism. My Elvish may not be perfect, I may not know if I am welcome at either the Seelie or Unseelie Courts of the sidhe, but I speak, I go, faithfully, regularly and with an open-heart.

My earliest knowledge of black holes came in the form of a picture book and accompanying book on tape. I remember being taken to the theater to see Star Wars: A New Hope when it came out. I was 5 years old. For the past 30 years, I have been a loyal and loving fan of Dr. Who. I believe that I have seen every episode it was possible for a viewer from the States to see (even the cobbled together bits of Shada with Tom Baker trying valiantly to fill in the blanks of that lost episode). Yes, I shuddered through the Colin Baker years, and my friend and I formed the brilliant and wonderful group, Tegan and Trillian and The Time Space Continuum, in high school. We had one song, called State of Decay. The Mask of Mandragora, the Caves of Androzani, their names roll off my tongue from bygone golden years.

My Requiem dress from LoTR has won me recognition recently in two different events. My college “thesis” basically was costuming The Wiz. It was more fun (and challenging) costuming munchkins in a rainbow of colors of tuxedo shirts than my actual “thesis” (Schopenhauer, Hegel and African American Theater). I am researching the theory behind the visuals of Nausada’s costume in Eragon (I know, I know - it’s just SOME of the visuals I liked). Don’t think I didn’t covet THE DRESS from Labyrinth. A Wrinkle in Time, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, The Voyage of Shannara, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the Codex Alera - I have spent time with them all, reading, dreaming, creating, living.

I don’t think I’ve met a vampire story I didn’t like. Stories about them line my bookshelves. I was listening to radio plays of The Hitchhiker’s Guide when I was a ‘tween. I am a third generation lover of the SF/F genre (my grandmother hasn’t met a Star Trek story she didn’t like). The very first bio I wrote for myself as an actress included a reference to Dr. Who.
I am African American. I am female. I am from the States. I am a fan of Science Fiction and Fantasy.
And I know I am not alone.
