Doh! It's two days after the tomorrow you spoke of.
I think the mainstream geek or closet geek would be excited by learning how a rocket is built and operated.
Explaining the teams, open source/hardware/community would be more of a focused topic that might not be as accessible to the standard, mostly oblivious geek.
So in conclusion, explaining the rocket would be like rubbing the geeks tummy, while your initial idea would be akin to giving him a bath. Some puppy geeks like baths, but regardless most all need them, whether they know it or not. =D
I decided to do a combination of both. I think the slides came out great. The first part is "what does it take to get to space", followed by two slides on how PSAS is open source, and then ending with a "Find your rocket passion" slide set. I use the last part to explain the teams with lots of pictures. I plan to make that part funny, saying things like "Maybe you like the smell of soldier" (avionics team), "or maybe you just like to blow things up" (propulsion team). I think it will go over well, and if it doesn't, it's only five minutes. :)
