SoulSilver review

I really need to get my mind off what happened, so I guess I should write a review of what I think SoulSilver so far.

So, I've beaten the first 7 gyms, so...what do I think of it so far?

To be honest, it's kinda boring. It's not bad...just boring.

I mean, if you've done Silver, Gold, Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Crystal, then you've played this game. And if you found any of them fun...you still will probably be bored by this. With Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, it felt fresh and new, since you had never gone into that region before, and it was on the DS. With each new generation of games, they got more fun. For example, with Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, they had Pokemon you knew, but with new sprites, new moves. And then FireRed and Leaf Green came out and upgraded all the Pokemon you couldn't find in Hoenn.

But this just feels stale. These are Pokemon you've already encountered in Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, thanks to the PalPark, with no new moves. In fact, this game may actually detract from D/P/P's features. The new touch screen features are clunky and impersonal. The Pokemon you encounter are stale, and have little ability when it comes to battling. They're all useless against the massive power the Gym Leaders' Pokemon display. If you don't trade over, then you are screwed when you get to the third gym. The dialogue is painfully bad as usual, but it's a Pokemon game, so what else did you expect? Although there is one thing I absolutely love about the game.

The rival character.
All the rival characters before him were either annoying, or just not a threat. This is the first rival character who actually poses a threat, and acts like a rival character. Not only that, he's well written. Which is something I miss in a Pokemon game. This is the only character whose character actually develops, and isn't just a fixed point, like the other rivals.

But still, if you can't trade over, or you don't like feeling like you're playing the same game twice, or even thrice, you won't like this game. If you've never played a Pokemon game before, you'll probably really like it.

rant, review, pokemon
