He's lurked. He's looked around. And now, without moving his mouth, the tall scaly figure is conversing quietly with a disembodied by natural-sounding artificial voice, via a natural-sounding artificial voice of his own.

"And you are positive there is no one in visual or audible range from our own facet of reality ( Read more... )

"No. None. All a child needs is love, protection, and guidance. Formal education is good, but depending on the species and world, might not be strictly necessary."

He listens and nods. "We normally think so. And of course we were quite eager to reject all the laws of the 'civilized' parts of our galaxy. But occasionally some of us worry that our children..." There's a pause, and one almost might say he had difficulty pronouncing the next word, except that physical pronunciation isn't a factor at all. "...I would not have wanted my children to have been...cheated in any respect..."

"I understand. I had several children of my own."

He smiles. "An Interesting Experience, is it not? My eldest daughter, Veronica -- and that is just the thing. She needed a name. We do not have names, but humans need them. They seem to need to name everything."

A rather razorsharp smile. "I do not quite understand the first word, and yet I would tend to agree."

Swindle chuckles at that, "My mate was raised by a human, and had adopted a dragon hatchling before we started, what's the phrase, going together. I considered her my daughter by the time my mate and I became mates." He stops for a moment, then continues, "Now, though, due to a LOL, I'm now the same species as my daughter."

He listens with interest. Congratulations, Swindle. You've just made the Chancellor's children seem so very very normal.

"Transformation is one thing with which we have not had to deal."

"I'd say, it's not somethin' where you c'd say, 'no adoptions allowed.' The trick is, the parent's gotta be able t'understand the kid, which isn't impossible. Most people can't do that, with th'kind of differences you're listin', but some can."

"Adoption's pretty hard stuff, no matter if it's the same species or not. But if a body's willin' t'put in the time t'see the kid, not as a representative of either species, but as an individual who's goin' to have a social structure that mixes both, it might work out."

He listens.
"Well, it is certainly something where people can say 'no adoptions allowed'. They have done it in many places. But normally, we feel quite comfortable rejecting such laws. We simply worry occasionally, not wanting to be making anything difficult for our children. But you have an excellent point."

He nods. "We generally think so as well, and happily are in a position to ignore such laws."
A smile. "How old is it?"

"My children are human, yes. It would never have been allowed in 'civilization,' but they cannot find us."

"I think that any parent who would think to worry about what is best for their kids is probably a good one. Bet your kids are loved and happy."
