One of the Nexus' many newer residents is tarrying near the sign again, peoplewatching and letting a question percolate. At length, the puzzlement within him finds voice. "Do you like to read?" he begins, "and if not, why?"

"Oh, I think you know my answer to that, darling."

Ali is quite glad to see Bod again, although she can't help a moment of maternal looking-over to make sure he's doing okay. No, really, she can't. She tried once. Let's just say, she'll never look at mangoes quite the same way again.

"I think some people don't read because they've been taught it's easier, and thus better, to let someone else do all their thinking."

Bod smiles when he sees her. "Hullo. Do people really think something is better if it's easier?"

Hmm? Just who might this fellow be, to get his wife all maternal looking? Not that that seems to be a difficult thing. Ali is practically the patron saint of wayward souls.

"I must agree," he says. "Too few are willing to think for themselves. Though that does not make it 'better,' simply because it is easier."

"A lot of them do, yeah. It's called 'progress'."

"Progress" is, to her, a word akin to "toxic", "poisonous", or "processed food-like product". But then Hans is there, which cheers her right up again.

"Bod, this is my husband Hans. Hans, this is Bod."

Bod tries not to boggle at the man; it isn't polite. "What isn't great about it? You can read all about all sorts of things. Why wouldn't you want to do that?"

"You don't know how?" There's a way the young and naive have of asking things, that lacks the judgment and scorn of an older voice.

I read very often. It's one of the few pastimes I can enjoy fully.

"That's good. Sometimes, I feel like I'm the only one."

My particular favorites are those speculative fiction novels now so outdated as to be entirely inaccurate.

"Oh? Like what?" He's curious, and hopes for titles to seek.

A resident Nexus mother (don't call her that) is sitting and watching a certain little pink Minicon run around on top of the sign. She glances down at the question and gives a terse nod. "Yes."

"Well, good." And, looking up at the metal behemoth, it occurs to him to wonder, "what do you read?"

"Books," she rumbles, as though it should be obvious.

"Who're you talking to?" Pink looks down, then squeals with delight. "Bod!"

"Well, yes," Bod admits, "but what kind?"

Pink gets a smile, and a bit of a wave. "Hullo, Pink."

"No. Because I can't do it very well yet." Emily pats her nearly flat belly as her unborn baby kicks.

The tall woman considers this, consulting those memories that aren't her own. "Maybe. If I had time."
