"I suppose, when I believe they have my best interests at heart."

But how do you determine their intentions?

"How they talk to me, and about me; and how they behave."

When I trust them, and like them, both. It doesn't happen often.

Mm. And how do you determine your friends?

By their virtue, and their strength, but more importantly, their motive. There are not many I would trust to turn my back to, let alone to consider a friend.

When they know me, and don't want to kill me.

Admittedly my standards are rather low, but you should meet some of the people I've had to deal with in my existence.

"When they've proven to me that I can trust them, and that they won't screw me over in the long run."

But by this standard, to prove their worth would require an extended period of commitment.

"Not always. Usually, a few hours or days can make a difference, plus there's always the first impression..."

Relying on appearances and first impressions is a swift path to self-deceit. The most socially gifted are usually the best liars.
