Holiday Tarantulas?

Nov 25, 2008 03:43

"Ok, so.. we're getting our niece a pet spider for the holidays. A tarantula. Except it seems there's different kinds of them. Anyone got a suggestion as to the best tarantula to get a kid for their first pet?"

Oh hey, have a Blues playing a flute - no song, just random notes. "I girl one, they live longer." Among other things.

"Yeah, we've heard things about that. And, um, about the males trying to escape. I figure Roll's not going to be happy with us for this anyway, we'd better not push our luck."

"Never a good idea- especially if yours is the one with the rocket broom."

A few more notes- oh, those two didn't sound that good. Blues frowned at the flute.

"So I don't continue to give you info you've already heard of, what is it that you still have questions on?"

"Lesse, they're big, furry, mostly from warm climates - I dunno how Levi will take that, warm's not really her thing - the females live longer than males, some climb and some don't, and if Roll sees it she's gonna scream."

"And there's, apparently, quite a few different species of them. Probably with different care requirements and difficulties and so on. At least we won't have to worry about bites and such, though maybe we still should in case Megan wants to look at it. I don't think any of them are really dangerous, though."

"So, it's basically suggestions for best species for a first pet. Something that won't be too hard for a curious kid to keep alive, hopefully won't escape, and won't be too hard to catch if it does."

"Not many people are going to be able to give you species names I'm afraid. Maybe point you in the direction of a pet store that has them, but names..." He shrugged.

"Will the keeper be alright feeding it?"

"... Y'know, I hadn't thought of that. I mean, we told her we'd get her one if she wanted, and I'm pretty sure she knows it eats bugs and maybe baby mice and stuff. Maybe we should check on that first."

"Not everyone can take feeding one animal to another, even if it's just little bugs or mice. And those that think they can, can't always."

"Yeah. And if that detail slipped my mind, I shouldn't assume the kid would have thought of it. With how much she likes bugs, I got a bad feeling we might have to think of something else..."

"Should I assume that she hasn't learned the whole 'circle of life' thing yet?"

"Eh, not really. It's only gone about as far as 'put the caterpillar back in the tree now so it can make a cocoon'. Though I don't think any of us are looking forward to explaining the relation between Turkey Dinner and turkey that waddles around the barnyard. We've been more worried about awkward questions about fire lizard mating flights. She's not quite a month old yet."

"I advise not giving her anything living for a while longer then. Responsibility for a life should only come after one understands death."

"Yeah, well.. kinda figured we'd have to explain that before another month's out anyway. At the rate things go, there's bound to be more stuff by then, and it's not like she hasn't seen things with her dad helping in the repair bay and all. She's already starting to ask questions about what the humans woulda done to 'bots at recycling centers after the point where they end up in pieces in a bin..."

"So, giant spiders are out, at least for a while. Any other suggestions for making sure Levi doesn't take after her Auntie Roll?"

"I mean really understands it. No amount of explaining is going to do that, Cut."

"Well, who does she look up to the most?"

Cut sighs. "I think that kind of understanding is something we all hope won't happen for a really long time. I mean, 'bots or not, it's better for them if they just get to be kids for a while, ya know? It's not like they were designed to be weapons like most of the ones on the Wilybot side of things."

Cut chuckles. "Now, if you were asking about Phantom I woulda had an easy answer for that one. But Levi? Everyone's either someone to play with or someone to ignore. She spends a lotta time with Bubble, but I don't think she really looks up to him. It's more cause he's a water based design, and she's got an elemental affinity for water and ice."

"Don't shield her too long or she'll have this little world built up around her, and it crashing down will not be pleasant."

"Would she like a goldfish?"

"Yeah, don't worry about that. X seems to be about as determined to make sure they can take care of himself if anything happens to him as he is about making sure he's around if they need him." Cut doesn't go into details on that just yet. "And the rest of us have learned a lot about new activations of the 'reploid' type since Zero."

"Heh, she might. She likes to watch Bubble's fish sometimes, or play with that huge Milotic he has. It makes the rest of us chilly just seeing her splash around in the pond in this kind of weather. Bet it freezing over wouldn't stop her..."
