Broadcast is sitting on one of the human-sized couches, hunched forward in thought, his elbows on his knees and fingertips pressed together, although the first fingers are tapping in time to the Danish electronica/dance music he's playing. It's more about the repetitive rhythmic sounds than the lyrics for him at the moment ( Read more... )

Jack mulls it over a bit before replying. "Gotta go with your gut, mate. Pretty's great, but only if you like the entire package."

"I liked the entire package when I was that package, but I think I like how I am now better. Both shells fit me, though, an' both are good for the missions an' whatnot that I'd be assigned. I think maybe I dunno how to chose between the two. I'll put one point on the 'guts' side... Thanks."

"I..." Oh, god, this thing is huge.

"Er. If it's got to happen, I'd do it either way. Maybe you'd get used to it the way you did the smaller one...?"

For the record, Broadcast is currently about four feet tall. "I could get used to it, yeah. Heheh, I can say I've literally changed my perspective a few times. I don't even know when exactly I started feelin' so attached to this shell. I'm used to adaptin' -- well, goes with the territory -- but this time...it just don't feel right to change." Broadcast restlessly taps the three fingers of each hand against each other.

"I would choose to remain in the form I found most comfortable," says a flat mechanical voice.

It's Soundwave, yes. Nine foot tall, and mostly bright blue and red. With a DDR screen on his chest and a small insectoid mech sitting on his shoulder. Ravage is laying on one of his feet. Both Soundwave and Ravage have scars that make them look as though they've been dunked in lava at some point in their distant past.

"Yeah, that'd be my choice, too. But then I wonder how much of a choice I really got. Vicious cycle kinda thing..I know what's right for me but is it really right for the greater good?" Broadcast looks up at the bot and gets a vague feeling of deja vu.

An emotionless red optic strip looks back. "If you are not at peak performance then the greater good is also compromised. Discomfort with your form would lessen performance."

"True that. I should bring it up next time I talk to the boss. Can't delay the inevitable but maybe somethin' else can be worked out." Broadcast hasn't realized yet who he's agreeing with. This guy is a far cry from his universe's Soundwave, and he's already too preoccupied with his own thoughts to have an inkling about his rival's potential presence.

I recently had a chance to 'upgrade' (sort of) and took it. It has been endlessly valuable.

That said, I can still go back to the way I was any time I like. What I have could be considered an augmentary addition rather than a core change. Perhaps that is the sort of thing you could look into, if it's available. If it doesn't feel right, then non-committal is the way to go.

That sounds like a great idea, but I dunno how plausible the option is in my case. I've gotten hints from the medic-man that this might as well be a permanent choice, an' the only way I could downsize again would be to have an incident of severe shell trauma. That ain't somethin' I want to repeat. Wish there was a way to try it out first, at least...

Would it be out of the question to develop some sort of simulation? I know that would be fairly long term and might not even be the best of help in your particular situation. Still, it seems like, at the least, that would be useful to others in your situation. After all, it only makes sense to take the 'car' for a test drive before driving it off the lot.

Hmmm...y'know, that might just be somethin' to try. The only drawback I could see'd be a way to simulate my special abilities, since some of 'em tap right into my core. Bein' able to try out those abilities in the new shell is important, but maybe there's a way to do it...Hmmm...

"Why is it important?"

"In the bigger scope of things -- no pun intended -- we could use more full-sized fighters. We just picked up another little guy, and he's now in the same situation I was when I got downsized, so if the boss had to chose between the two of us for an upgrade I'd be it. On another side of it, I got a medical issue that will eventually only be solved through an upgrade...or a retrograde, as the joke is now bein' spread. May not be an immediate concern, but I'll have to chose sometime."

"It sounds to me like you don't really have much of a choice. Either you make the change and learn to live with it, or you end up not living at all."

He hangs his head. "Yeah...I just... I guess... Um..." Broadcast is at a loss for words. This is a bad sign coming from the chatty boom box. "I guess it comes down to me feelin' like I'm in a bit of a void. Like it's weird to have the option to 'retrograde', but it's also disconcertin' to not have a choice in the end."
