Nephrite is in the Nexus- not that he ever leaves- and he's sitting on one of the many Nexus Couches with a glass of liquor. Settled nearby is a large basket of sand, which his gold fire lizard is hovering over protectively. Since the fire lizard can't ask the obvious question, Nephrite does ( Read more... )

Syn ambled over, "A fire lizard? Like from the Pern books?"

She grinned, "My family and friends give me comfort."

"What do you think that is?" he replies with a smirk, pointing at Brigid.

He nods slightly. "The stars have always brought me comfort."

She looked the fire lizard over, "She's very pretty. I'd like one, if I may."

She grinned, "That's good. Everyone should have at least one thing that gives them comfort."

He chuckles and reaches over to stroke Brigid, who looks at Syn and chirps. After a moment, the queen digs out an egg, which Nephrite puts in a sand-filled clay pot and offers to Syn. "You know how to care for it?"

"The stars have been my friends, through darkness and light."

((It's a brown fire lizard, male.))

Fafnir boggles.

"Fifteen? Wow, that's quite a clutch! I'd like one." He smiles as charmingly as he can.

"As for comfort -- many things, but mostly my family."

"The stars have always brought me comfort." He reaches over to stroke the queen, who looks at Fafnir curiously. After a moment, she chirps and digs out an egg, which Nephrite transfers to an egg pot and hands to him. "I'm assuming you know how to care for one?"

Fafnir beams at the little queen and takes the pot carefully from Nephrite, cradling it against his body.

"Well, I know I have to keep it warm, and it takes at least 7 days to hatch, probably more. Any advice you could give me would be welcome." He grins.

"My interest in the stars is largely in the form of wanting to travel among them."

"For the first few months or so, they mostly just eat and sleep and make a lot of racket. Their eye color indicates their mood- red means anger or hunger, white means fear, yellow means alarm. They communicate telepathically with images and emotions, and they'll let you know when their skin needs oiling. Patchy skin can be deadly when they teleport. When the egg hatches, greet the hatchling with food and gentle thoughts. I think that's all the necessary basic information."

"The closest I've been to the stars was the times I visited the Moon Kingdom of my universe."

Dante strolled over, looking around and spotting the queen. "She's pretty. Yea, I'd like one please."

He shrugged his shoulders, "Family mostly. My twin brother, and my adopted sisters."

Ooh, praise! That makes Brigid happy! She immediately goes to demand scratches and more praise, making Nephrite chuckle. "Flattery gets you everywhere with these creatures."

"The stars have always been my comfort, for as long as I can remember."

All of which he provides, "I see that. Such a beautiful girl."

He nodded, "Don't get much chance just to sit back and watch the stars, but on the times that I did, well they brought me peace."

And we now have a puddle of happy fire lizard. At least until she remembers she's supposed to be making sure her eggs get good homes. She peers at Dante, then digs an egg out, which Nephrite transfers to an egg pot and hands to Dante. "You know how to care for one?"

"I'm a bit more intimate with the stars. I'm a star mage, what modern people might call an astrologer. Only...not."

"Comfort? Hmm. Family, friends, a job well done. Knowing that I've managed to make a dent in the world."

"Little but important things."

Looking from the hovering golden lizard to the basket and then to Nephrite, Girouette smiles. And looks frankly curious.

"If a 'fire lizard' is the pretty creature with you right now, I think that I would. If you don't mind it?"

"I've always taken comfort from the stars myself. They've been my friends through darkness and light."

Nephrite chuckles. "Yes, she's a fire lizard. They are charming creatures, if quite a handful as hatchlings." He strokes the queen, who looks at Girouette curiously. Then she chirps and digs out an egg, which Nephrite transfers to an egg pot and hands to him. "You know how to care for one?"

"The stars are a constant, something I can appreciate. Certainly they've guided me more than once."

Girouette accepts the pot with a nod of thank-you and another smile.

"Warmth until hatching, I suspect? And attention to the little baby lizard."

"Details are always useful, of course --"

And he digs out a ledger and pen, to make notes if necessary.

"Warmth until hatching, yes. The temperature should be like that of a hot beach. The egg should hatch in around five days, and wen it does, greet the hatchling with food- preferably red meat, the bloodier the better- and gentle thoughts. They communicate telepathically with images and emotions, and their eye color indicates their mood- red means anger or hunger, blue or green means contentment, yellow means alarm, and white means fear. They can naturally teleport, and their skin needs to be oiled when it gets patchy- the fire lizard will let you know it needs oiling when it complains of itchiness. And they also produce fire after eating a phosphine bearing rock known as firestone."

Morpheus does a lot of reading. He looks interested, settling into a crouch and holding a hand out for the gold to decide if she wants to accept his touch.

"Fire lizards? Pernese?"

Brigid is quite happy to accept his touch if he's offering scritches!

"Yes, Pernese fire lizards. The mother's egg was brought here from Pern by a dragonrider."

Yes, he is offering scritches. He even knows about the nice spots along the eye ridges.

"I haven't been here long enough for this place to cease to amaze me. I would like one."

Yay, scritches! Brigid trills happily and enjoys the scritches for a moment before turning to dig out an egg.

Nephrite then transfers the egg to an egg pot and hands it to Morpheus. "You know how to care for one?"

((It's a green, female.))
