Melisan listened carefully to Tony's speech. "Son, how much do you know about international relations? As for your second question, I'm a diplomat in a decidedly foreign country. Half the things I do are seen as weird or backwards by the locals."

From his remarks during his last visit, I have the impression he thinks his government's laws apply to everyone, regardless of origin or location.

"It is not exactly his government's laws either."

He's doing this on behalf of a government he owes no alliegance to?

"No, it is not exactly that. It is more, that the government is not even all on board with this decision. But those who aren't, are afraid to speak up."

"It created a war of split decisions in my dimension when it happened."

So he represents not an established policy, but an attempted coup? Better and better.

Melisan sighed. "This is going to be like Lar'tya all over again. I should have just walked past and left him to deal with the consequences."

Well, there's a chance he hasn't declared war on you yet, and there should still be good seats available if you want to watch the inevetable.

"Perhaps I shall. This might be entertaining, given that I won't be the one called in to clean up the mess after he's done."

Every governement has to make decisions that are going to be unpopular with their own people as well as the other countries at a certain point in time.

"I was mostly wondering why you thought that a Jarzoni government official, such as myself, living in Aldis, would need to register with the government of... the United States of America, did you say? Or an Amestrian, or a Roamer, or a Nexusite, or a citizen of any other country. Now, if I were interested in taking up residence in the United States of America, or was assigned there as a diplomat, I would obey the local laws. Or I wouldn't, and expect to get punished for it. However, as of right now, I don't have plans to that effect.

"Which makes me curious as to why you are attempting to enforce what is apparently a United States of America law on non-United-States-of-America soil. I would understood if you posted someone at the portal to your world and asked all people to enter to register, but this," Melisan waved his hand, "strikes me as something I deliberately tell any junior keepers how not to behave when abroad."

"And does your country have a short form of its name? I'm sorry, but it's a bit of a mouthful."

This territory is directly linked to the USA, as such, all superhumans here are able to cross over and be potential threast to the safety of our nation. If they aren't registered, they could get off scot free and the people would be forced to just absorb more damage and limp onward.

USA.
