A teenage boy with dark hair and glasses steps through one of the many portals into the Nexus and stops dead, looking immediately wary. His eyes fall on the sign, and wariness turns to incredulity as he reads, then to something that looks a lot like exasperated amusement

"Shift th' way you idolize them t' cut out tha' part."

He shakes his head. "It's not like that. She raised me, and I don't want to do anything that would have disappointed her if she were still around."

"Internalize it, then, an' decide what you want. For certain. Leave them outta it."

"I don't know. I don't want to forget the things she taught me. I don't want to forget that they came from her."

"Decide if your past is more important than your future."

"What if they're equally important?"

"Then decide if you would actually be happy trying to live in the past. From what I've seen most people aren't. But what's causing the problem?"

[orphans_snow]

"My job is pretty much completely at odds with the way I was raised. And the thing is, I like my job, and I want to be better at it, but getting better would mean doing something that...that Alison never wanted me to do, and I don't..." He makes a face that's somewhere between pained and frustrated. "I don't want to betray her like that."

Maybe you could try compromising a little on both and see if meeting halfway works?

Yuki bites his lip. "This isn't exactly the kind of thing that you can compromise over. It's sort of an all or nothing deal."

Ah, gotcha.

Well, let's take how you feel out of it for a moment. Which do you think'd have the best outcome, ultimately, being who you want to or listening to this person?

"That depends. Best for me, or best in a more all-encompassing sense?"

"Do what makes you happy. There's no greater honor to pay to one's past than to add to its glory."

[orphans_snow]

"That's the thing, though. She would think this was glorious or honorable. She'd be horrified."

"We mustn't live for other people, only for ourselves. To do otherwise is to waste the gift we're given."

[orphans_snow]

"What if she was right, though?" His voice drops until it's only barely audible. "I don't want to become something that would hurt her."

"You decide which is more important, and you decide whether betraying their memory is the same as betraying them."

[orphans_snow]

"I guess I'm just having trouble deciding which is more important. I mean, they're both important."

"That they are, but if they are at odds, one msut be greater than the other."

[orphans_snow]

Yuki frowns. "Why? Just because things disagree doesn't mean one is more important than the other." He's trying not to become upset, but that particular comment hit a nerve.
