"Are friends really necessary?" He drums his fingers against his leg softly. "And how does one stop looking back? The past is past, and decisions cannot be reversed."

"They are if you want to be happy and healthy. And...I don't think people ever really stop looking back. They look back less when their life in the present is full."

"Indeed." He looks thoughtful.

"It's natural to have doubts sometimes. Even when we've done the right thing..."

"Yes, I suppose so." He smiles sadly.

"Friends and fame are the hardest type of wealth to lose.

It can be good to look back. It helps you understand what you see when you look forward."

"I see. Of course, forgetting the past would be beyond foolish. I just wish to stop second-guessing myself. I believe in my decision. So why must I constantly question it?"

"I imagine that you question because there are no either/or answers, and every situation has a few answers that might work."

[thedogbotherer]

"Yes. That makes sense. Thank you."

"Some people do etch out nice lives as hermits. That's not for most, though."

"Depends. Are you referring to yourself unable to stop looking back, or someone else?"

"Myself."

"What in the past has been bothering you?"

"A decision I made recently."

"But you can learn from the past, which you can't do if you don't look back. As for friends... they can be useful."

[thedogbotherer]

"Of course. That is not quite what I meant. How would you stop from second-guessing yourself, and worrying over a past decision that you still feel is the right one?"

[theo_lunaric]

"Oh. That. I don't know that one. I haven't figured it out myself. I think time will take care of it, or when you have actual affirmation that what you did was right."

"Ah. I see." He smiles sadly. "Well, thank you for your time, sir."

"Friends are good for you, sweetie. And it's okay to look back, as long as you don't let your past control your life today."

"How are they good? Why do I need them?"

"If they're good friends, they'll listen to you when you need to talk, help you whenever they can, and they won't abandon you for making stupid mistakes. It feels good to have people like that around."
