People do not give gifts in my time, therefore I have never given anyone anything. Can other things count as gifts?

Can you give someone something...non-tangible? Or does it have to be something physical? I was always taught that giving gifts is a sign of emotion. I would also like to experience gift giving and recieving, but I have no idea how. Are there set dates acceptable for the exchanging of items/non-tangible...things?
