The Loner

The stranger sat back
And tipped his hat
As the music kept on playing
If you caught his eye
You’d start to cry
As you saw the pain in his life
The dancers are many
And rag-times a plenty
But you can’t take your eyes off of him
He’s get whiskey vermouth
Sitting in that booth
And a badge of glory on his chest
Much like a man
Of old days back when
When sheriffs were a dime a dozen
He’s fought his wars
And settled old scores
And he’s just waiting for the end
All eyes are blind
Yet turned on him
As he tips that glass to drink
A man walks in
And starts to grin
Yet he still doesn’t move an inch
The man pulls a gun
And yells at the one
Who sits in the booth over yonder
The man looks back
And starts to laugh
And in a second it’s all over
Smoke fills the room
As you hear that boom
And only one man is standing
The man from the booth
Says if you’re going to shoot
Make sure you hit your target
He sits down
And starts to frown
Realizing he must keep on living
If only one man
Could best his hand
He finally be at rest
