I remember the first time I heard Etta James sing. I was 9, on the floor in front of these built in cabinets along the interior north wall of our living room. Our Living room was oriented with them as the focus. Above them were shelves that housed our TV, stereo, and an assortment of family treasures.
In one of the cabinets was my father’s record collection. A random assemblage of rock, country, comedy, and vocal compilations. I used to love to lie on the floor and listen to Bill Cosby, Credence Clear Water Revival, Alabama and dozens of others. One day I pulled one out that had no cover ar,t save for the stylistic title “Soul Love”. I know corny, but it was from the seventies. It had everything from Al Green and Bill Withers, to Miss Etta James.
I still love every song on that Album, deep, poignant songs that speak to hearts young and old. I lay on that deep pile brown shag carpet, staring up at the ceiling, hearing Miss James soft smoky voice whisper wishes into the air I could not begin to understand. Then she would take a pause, draw in a breath, and overwhelm you with the sheer power of her voice.
I have had many teachers and been given many gifts by people I will never meet. Thank you Miss James, for all the emotions you helped me find, and put a voice too.

Sunday Kind Of Love
I wanna Sunday kind of love
A love to last past Saturday night
And I'd like to know it's more than love at first sight
And I wanna Sunday kind of love, oh yeah yeah
I wanna a love that's on the square
Can't seem to find somebody, someone to care
And I'm on a lonely road that leads to no where
I need a Sunday kind of love
I do my Sunday dreaming, oh yeah
And all my Sunday scheming
Every minute, every hour, every day
Oh, I'm hoping to discover
A certain kind of lover
Who will show me the way
And my arms need someone, someone to enfold
To keep me warm when Mondays and Tuesdays grow cold
Love for all my life to have and to hold
Oh, and I wanna Sunday kind of love, oh yeah yeah yeah
I don't wanna Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday
Or Thursday, Friday or Saturday
Oh, nothing but Sunday, oh yeah yeah
I wanna Sunday, Sunday, I wanna Sunday kind of love, oh yeah
Sunday, Sunday, Sunday kind of love
