Day 6: Interstate 5 to Long Beach, CA

Jun 08, 2009 22:04

Really there's not much to say about the drive, except that it convinced me to take coastal and scenic roads whenever possible. The endless waves of tan terrain and straight unvarying road played more havoc with my resolve and driving endurance than any other portion of the trip so far. That and it just amazes me why people would try to farm and live out here... it's a barren desert, it seems to suck up the resources of everything around it just to stay alive. Bah. Also, the solid wall of smog that we hit coming over the pass into LA... totally a turn off. Despite my griping, Long Beach is a beautiful place. We're staying here with some friends of my father's who have lived here their whole lives. Were I to try and describe the relationship between our host, and my father it would be as if describing Jedi master (our host) to pupil (my father). While I consider my father successful and very proficient in his field... this man was masterful. And he has great stories to tell.

Any how, after buying a check engine diagnostic thingy from Autozone (because it cost less in CA than having someone do it for you, the autozone's here can't do it, so no free diagnostic for us.) We found out that the check engine light is on for the same reasons as we thought had been fixed in Walla Walla. Hmmm. So after that we got a driving tour of Long Beach. It's a pretty nice place, looks very new and nice and... well if I had to live in SoCal it'd be here.  For dinner we had fresh swordfish and artichokes, oh mah lord was it tasty. Currently I am just relaxing and putzing around on the computer. Tomorrow we help with errands and chores!
