Summary: What is one of the biggest thing you can wish for at Christmas?
It would be the first Christmas they had celebrated alone. Every one of their friends and family were already busy. When they had decided to settle down in the countryside, to be away from the city life and narrow minded people, for many of their friends, it would take too many hours to get to them as well seeing other members of their families. Orlando was not able to move around much either, not when he was due any day, and with that settled, they stayed home.
Sean had been busy with shopping and decorating, so much so that he felt like a brownie. Orlando felt bad that he hadn't done much, but Sean tried to tell him that he carried their greatest gift. If Orlando had his wish though, he would have already given birth, because now he felt like an elephant, and was constantly tired. Having pre-contractions didn't help either.
Sean finally declared that all preparations were now finished for their little Christmas dinner the next day, and he thought that they could relax together on the sofa with a snack. Orlando thought it was a good idea. He loved nothing more than to lay there between his lover's knees, feeling the warmth and touches from him.
With two plates and one glass each, Sean put their snacks on the coffee table. He also let the TV continue with the film they were airing, which Orlando started to watch. Sean stood, waiting for Orlando to change positions so that he could sit behind him.
Some time later…
Orlando looked up. "Is it finished already?" he asked
"Yes, my love. Did you fall asleep?" Sean asked as he stretched out his hand to help Orlando up.
"I think I dozed off. You know I haven't been sleeping well and really wish this was over." Orlando said and took Sean's hand. He slowly put his feet down and sat up. The shirt he had on had crept up to show off his belly. Sean bent down and kissed him and put his hand on the exposed, stretched skin.
"She will come at exactly the right moment," Sean tried to support Orlando. He sat down beside him and pulled the shirt down for his lover. "I don't know how good this will be…" he said as he handed Orlando one of the plates of food.
"I'm sure there's nothing wrong with it, you have always made great meals, way better than me." Orlando moved a little, he was a little uncomfortable.
They began to eat and continued watching Robin Hood- Prince of Thieves.
"I like when the Sheriff says 'Call off Christmas'," Orlando said between the mouthfuls of food.
Sean looked at him. "I didn't think you would feel like that, or is it just now? I think we have something to celebrate."
"Mmm, you're probably right, it is probably just now. Though you have to agree, Alan Rickman delivers a few great lines in the film. Like 'I shall cut out his heart with a spoon'," Orlando said trying imitated Alan.
"The film sure has some great moments," Sean managed to get out between his laughs.
They watched the next thirty minutes in silence. Then Sean asked if they should drink some tea and eat Gingerbread. Orlando nodded, but didn't let him up from the couch. For a moment, his grip hardened and then he took a few quick breaths.
"Love, do the contractions bother you?" Sean asked, as he knew Orlando had a few big ones occasionally.
"You know they do. Sorry, I shall let you go," he said, not daring to tell Sean that he was scared.
Waiting for Sean to come back, he tried to do a little meditation exercise, designed for calming down his own feelings, and hopefully lessening the contractions some. Though he suspected the latter to be hard, as during the day, he had felt the baby move further down. He sat stroking his stretched belly, marvelling that he had been able to carry the baby and how it had grown.
When Sean was back, Orlando felt slightly better, but he could not do much more than nibble on the gingerbread. He felt that it had a little too much spice in it for him. Before the film ended, Orlando had another powerful contraction, though he felt it was different this time from the others.
As soon as the film was over, he rose heavily and went to the bathroom. The baby was pressed very hard on his pelvis and bladder.
Back in the living room once again, he told Sean that he wanted go to bed and see if he could sleep. Sean nodded and then took care of the dishes and cleaned up. Between the chores, he went to the open bedroom and checked on Orlando. He was worried. There was something going on with Orlando today that he hadn't seen before, but could not put his finger on. At the back of his mind, he suspected that maybe it was that the birth was so close.
He could not see much, as Orlando had pulled the quilt over himself and lay with his back towards the door. Sean could not hear any sound other than regular breathing, so he felt calm.
Sean could have sat down to watch something else on TV, he knew that Orlando would not have been pissed at him if he did, but he sort of felt that tonight, it was not the right thing to do. When the bedroom was darker and he thought Orlando was sleeping, he went to bed, and tried to be silent as he lay down beside his lover. He laid an arm over Orlando and placed himself close to him.
Sean wasn't sure if he had slept for a few minutes or an hour when he was woken up.
"Sean, wake up. I think it's time." Orlando pushed at him.
"Ugh, what?"
"We need to go to the hospital, now." Orlando's voice betrayed the fact that he was on the way to panicking. "It has started!"
That woke Sean up. "When did it start? Have you counted the time between your contractions? Has your water broken?"
"I don't knoooow." Orlando grimaced as he felt a new contraction. When it was over, he continued, "I think it could have been sometime during Robin Hood, maybe at the same time that Marion got Robin. It's around twelve minutes between the contractions now and my water just broke. I wanted to go earlier, but when we got the information from the hospital, they said it would not be a crisis as long as it hadn't broken."
Sean got up quickly and dressed. They had talked about how they would do this so he could stay calm. He checked that Orlando was dressed, took Orlando's bag and then led them out to the car. He nearly forgot their cell phones, but remembered at the last moment.
In the car, he called the hospital to tell them that they were on their way. If he drove fast, they would be there in half an hour, but as it was winter and dark, he knew it would take longer. He tried to keep a conversation going. Orlando was a lot more quieter than he usually was.
At the hospital, they were met by their doctor and taken to the maternity ward. After registering, they examined Orlando to see how far the birth process had come along. They had earlier decided that Orlando would try to have a normal pregnancy where possible, when they saw that he would be able to do so.
Four hours later, Orlando wasn't so silent anymore, and he had probably cursed Sean for every possible thing he could think of. He was tired and hoarse.
"One more push!" the midwife encourage him, "Give everything you have! You can do it."
Sean had let him hold his hand, and it was squeezed so hard that he didn't know if he would have working use of it when this was over, but he had no intentions of leaving Orlando. He tried helping him the only way he could.
A long cry came from Orlando and was mixed with a much shriller one. A minute later, the midwife put the little girl on Orlando's chest. She had dark hair and the new parents said that she was adorable.
Sean kissed Orlando.
"This is the greatest Christmas present we could ever have," Sean said as he stroked their daughter.
"Welcome to the world Alisa Eva Bloom." Orlando looked down with so much pride and joy.
When the little family had settled, Sean called around to their families and friends to tell them that there was a new member of the family, born on Christmas day.
