Eomer had walked around for the last hour trying to get Laniel to fall asleep, but she still didn't show any indication of being at all sleepy. He was glad that she had at least stopped crying. He was almost wishing he had not said that he would take care of her this evening… but Legolas needed some time alone.

Eomer went back to their room, lying her down in her crib. Not a minute later she started to cry. He rocked the crib, hoping the movement would sooth her but nothing he tried worked.

As a last resort he had sat down and started to sing:
Ally, bally, ally bally bee,
Sittin' on yer mammy's knee
Greetin' for anither bawbee,
Tae buy mair Coulter's candy.

Ally. bally, ally, bally bee,
When you grow up you'll go to sea,
Makin' pennies for your daddy and me,
Tae buy mair Coulter's Candy.

Mammy gie me ma thrifty doon
Here's auld Coulter comin' roon
Wi' a basket on his croon
Selling Coulter's Candy.

Little Annie's greetin' tae
Sae whit can puir wee Mammy dae
But gie them a penny atween them twae
Tae buy mair Coulter's Candy.

Poor wee Jeannie's lookin' affa thin,
A rickle o' banes covered ower wi' skin,
Noo she's gettin' a double chin
Wi' sookin' Coulter's Candy.*

It was an old lullaby his mother had sung to him when he was little and later had sung Eowyn. Finally, as he finished, it appeared that Laniel might actually fall asleep. He felt exhausted. 'How did Legolas manage?'

He looked up and saw that his consort had walked into their room.

"Please do not stop because of me." Legolas said. "What is it you are singing?"

"A lullaby I learnt when I was little. I could try to translate it so you know what it means." Eomer answered.

Legolas smiled, "I would very much like to hear it…"

Eomer began again, in the common language.

Ally, bally, ally bally bee,
Sitting on your mother’s knee
Crying for another halfpenny
To buy more Coulter’s candy

Ally, bally, ally, bally bee,
When you grow up you'll go to sea,
Making pennies for your daddy and me,
To buy more Coulter's Candy.

Mother, give me my money box down
Here's old Coulter coming round
With a basket on his head
Selling Coulter's Candy.

Little Annie's crying to
So what can poor little mother do
But give them a penny between the two
To buy more Coulter's Candy.

Poor wee Jeannie's looking very thin,
A rickle of bones covered over with skin
Now she's getting a double chin
From sucking Coulter's Candy.

"Again, please?" Legolas urged him when he finished.

Before he had finished it a second time Legolas had started to hum the melody. A third time and the elf had almost all words.

It sounded so beautiful when Legolas sang it that Eomer nearly lost his place. Legolas had moved forward, to sit behind Eomer, wrapping his arms round the human.

When they finally stopped singing, they both looked down at their daughter, who seemed to have finally fallen into a peaceful sleep.
