Chapter 2

The time passed, but when nothing seemed to happen, Gandalf decided he would try to push them. “Legolas, could you please try to explain to William what it is that you were about to do?”

“Gandalf is right. He is always right.” Legolas finally tried to look at Will. “I should apologize to you. I am sorry.”

Will looked at the Elf, not knowing if he would think of it as a he or a she. When he tried to see the girl as a boy, he could not. She would probably always be Missne for him since that was the first he had seen. “I do not understand, honestly.” Will tried in vain to process everything. “What were you about to do?”

“What Gandalf did not say is that when fen elves get close to water, we get the urge to bring the people with us to the bottom especially if you reach a fen.” She fell silent for a moment, but as if to get past it as quickly as possible she continued. “This fen is my birth one - Edhelnen. I tried to drown you. I am sorry, William.”

For the first time, it became clear what kind of danger Will had very nearly gotten himself into, yet all that he could say was. “Oh my.”

“I promise to try not to do it again… with you,” a regretful Missne voiced.

Will stayed silent, waiting for her to say more, although he was not quite sure if he could take her at her word. All too much had happened before her centering around deceit; its ramifications had shaken his world, leaving him nothing to do but watch it all crumble down around him. Too much that he had to forgive another, yet he did not feel ready or able to do any forgiving, especially a creature whose very make up was lies and deception.

Missne stretched out her hand to touch his. Will looked up at her.

“Will you take my apology?” she asked, causing him to swallow hard.

“Yes, I forgive you… this time. I hope you can keep your promise, but I must admit that I do not expect you to hold to your word,” Will whispered, thinking she probably was a little like Jack. He squeezed her smooth hand in his, offering a tentative smile.

“When you have done that, I think I have something else to explain... that is for both of you.” Gandalf grinned.

The youths turned to him, not thinking, yet still they held to each other’s hands. They both felt the importance of what the old man was about to tell them.

“As I mention I have had signs telling me that we would get a new visitors from another world, Legolas. You were of great help last time when Robin came, and as you have some experience, you have been chosen,” Gandalf began, but was interrupted by Missne asking. “Chosen to do what?”

“I will tell you in time, but let me tell it in my way!” His voice taking on a slightly irritated tone at having been cut off. “It is rare that people… beings can travel between the worlds. When that happens it always has some purpose. That was so last time, if you remember, Legolas. Not all of the time do both worlds need help at the same time. This time… I perceive we will have a benefit by it.”

“Excuse me? May I ask what you mean by worlds? The way you speak about it, it sounds like it is not the same as it is in mine. Though, that can not be true. Does Middle Earth lie somewhere near China or the South Indies? Where does it lie?” Will interjected, creasing his brow, desperate to understand the man in grey robes, holding a large wooden staff.

“I am sorry, young man. Maybe I ought to have explained that first.” His forehead crinkled as his blue eyes darkned. “You have fallen into another world, one that is not anywhere you would find on any map where you come from. You can say Middle Earth is another world in its entirety, but even if they are not always like each other, there are points that can be found which are similar in appearance. The time is different between the worlds, which you probably will notice shortly. I would think if you really thought back to the things you love and hold dear you will be able to get back to your own world. Am I not right about that, Legolas? Was it not so that Robin could travel between the worlds?”

“Yes, but she also had to step on hare-foot turf. Does any hare-foot grow where you come from, William?” She smiled at him.

He had to think. “I am not sure. The Caribbean has a large flora so it is possible… you can expect to find all kinds of mystical things there.”

“It most likely isn’t hare-foot that brought you here,” Gandalf interjected. “If it has mystical properties and a completely different flora than those that grow where Robin comes from, it most likely is another plant. I will have to consult with Galadriel about that, I think.”

Will nodded, hoping that Gandalf would continue to explain what all this was about.

“To help you to better understand, I perhaps should try to explain what happened last time. At that time, this world lived under the threat of an evil made up of the Manulô , Thind mân and King Ag . Thanks to help from a human girl the threat was dissolved and taken care off. Had it not been for her we would have more or less vanished.” The old man paused, a heavy sigh sagging his shoulders briefly. “Sadly, evil can never go away totally and it will turn up again and again in different shapes. There exist all kind of ills, most which do not put everything in jeopardy. It is an evil the Edhellô do when they lead unassuming persons to a watery grave.”

Missne bowed her head, squirming where she sat. Gandalf put his hand on her knee to still her as he continued, “Not that it can be amended; it is an inborn instinct that play havoc with them, though being told again and again not to do so to innocent travelers will hopefully teach them that it is wrong.” It appeared as though his last words calmed the Elf.

“Evils and the works of it is the truth for every world. There will be times of peace, but malevolence will continue to lie in the deep places of the earth and come back when we least expect it. When one world is on its way to be destroyed, therein it seems the time to ask for help from another… especially when the way is open.” Gandalf gave a longer pause, allowing all that he had said seep into the two.

“There have been signs of things in motion, though the biggest threat exists not in our world, but in yours, William. We have evils here, as always, but sadly we have yet to find the last pieces to see it desist. It is possible, William, that you are one of them, as Callas will be of big help to you.”

“Gandalf, why have you not said anything to me about this before? Perhaps, warned me?” Missne asked, her eyes wide with worry and more than little fear.

“Muin pentithen , I did not know when it would begin and I did not want to worry you.”

She rose, wailing, “I am not little! I am hundreds of years past my coming of age!”

“Yes, you are, Legolas, but you are still young for an Elf. You are one of the youngest, and you will never get away from how old you ever will be.”

Will saw how she quickly changed between her moods. Also, now that he studied her, it appeared as though she was not all that young; but that could be because of what he had heard and now drawn to conclusion.

He was broken from his thoughts when Missne asked her next question, one that he had started to wonder as well, “Do you have any idea of what is expected from us?”

“Some I know and some I do not know, but we need to get to Lorien and call a meeting.” Gandalf gazed around at their surroundings. “I think it would not hurt if we start early in the morning, since the dusk has already started to stretch the shadows long upon the earth. Since it is not far to your cave, Legolas, take William there and try to get some sleep. You both will need all the energy you can muster.”

Missne seemed unwilling to argue with Gandalf as she picked up her things and motioned for Will to follow her.
