Summary: Sam makes a pact with Edward Cullen to save his brother from hell.
Sam knew that he had done something wrong. He tried not to feel bad about it, but he would do everything he could for his brother. He had tried everything to get Dean away from his doom. The doom Dean had brought upon himself for saving Sam. It was when they met Edward and Sam had seen the attraction between his brother and the vampire that the solution had come to him.
If Edward could turn Dean into a vampire, he would become immortal and then there would be fewer things that could kill him. If he could not be killed easily, then Dean would have a bigger chance to get back from hell.
Everything looked good, even though Sam knew that Dean was fighting what he had been taught, and the feelings he held for Edward, but Sam hoped the feelings were the strongest. Dean tried to make Edward leave by telling him that he had to choose. Choose between his family or him. Edward was very reluctant and Sam had played on that.
Sam had taken Edward to one side, giving him a modified story of what Dean did, and also telling him that if Edward didn't agree to help Sam, both of them would lose Dean. In the beginning, Edward didn't think it would be a good idea to turn Dean into a vampire, but Sam was very good in his persuasion so Edward gave in.
Knowing his brother Sam knew Dean would not like the idea, so he had asked Edward if it would be possible to not spoil the blood too much with any drugs. Edward had told Sam he preferred clean blood, but it might also help Dean to forget what the transformation would be. So it was decided that Sam would see that Dean was not sober or too conscious.
To make Dean cooperate and offer no resistance, Sam had drugged him. Then Edward had done his part. They had been in an abandoned cottage in the woods, and all Sam learned was what Edward told him and parts of it later shouted by Dean.
Directly after that, Dean had become manageable and Edward had taken him to the cottage. He had bitten Dean and then watched him turn into a vampire. It hadn't taken many days and as Edward had thought, Dean was out from the beginning and when he started to come round, Dean had for some time assumed that he had some withdrawal symptom from the drugs. Though as time went on and he became aware of everything around him, how he could hear the animals in the woods, smell their blood, Dean quickly put together what Edward had done to him.
Being a new born vampire, Dean was strong, fast and angry, but Edward had the advantage of being able to hear his thoughts, which Edward also used to be able to reach Dean and calm him down. Of course, not before Dean showed that he was a Winchester. After Dean composed his feelings, he did listen to Edward. Edward brought him for his first hunts and told Dean that it would be tough for him to be with Sam, but he had to try because Edward had promised his brother they should continue their hunting. Sam had in his way promised he would give Dean the chance to have time to find his vital need.
In between all the profanities, anger towards both Edward and Sam for the fact that they tricked him, Dean found a little part hoping it might help him to get out of his contract, though he knew it probably wouldn't be so, or Sam would die. When he didn't lash out, he continued the relationship he had begun with the older vampire. Of the latter, Edward didn't tell Sam much.
Sam had wanted to be there all the time, but he had trusted Edward when he told him that it was a bad idea because his blood would be all too tempting for Dean, and then he would not care that they were brothers. Sam had held out as close as he dared, and also in that way, he could keep other hunters away if they heard anything about what might have happened in the area.
When Edward could, he had told Sam how Dean had fought through his transformation and the first days as a new vampire. In the agreement, Sam had made sure that if things should go wrong, Edward had to teach Dean the things he needed to know for surviving. The biggest was that being a bloodsucker didn't mean that he needed to drink human blood. Sam had told Edward that they had met other vampires in their hunts that lived on animals, so Dean would know it.
Edward held his promise. The day he called Sam to say that he could meet his brother again came faster than both had thought. Sam was happy for that, as it meant that then he would get a few more days with Dean if his plan went wrong.
It wasn't all a bed of roses, though. They both had to take all of Dean's profanity when he woke up after learning what they had done. Sam had also thought that the bond between his brother and Edward had been much deeper, but Dean managed to set Edward in flight as soon as Edward had decided that he had upheld his end of the bargain with Sam. Sam wanted to believe that he would come back when his brother calmed down though.
Of course things didn't go as Sam wished. They learnt at first that Dean couldn't escape his doom, but having been changed into a vampire had some advantages. As long as he wasn’t decapitated and burned, he was immortal. Dean managed to flee hell.
His little visit to the lower regions forced Dean to begin to really come to terms with being a vampire. He tried to not get in trouble, but it wasn't easy as the Winchesters had sent a lot of demons down there. In the beginning, he had tried not to feed on any demons, but he also noticed that he didn't crave as much blood. Dean preferred to be weaker and those that he found who weren't demons, but really bad people, he took their blood in the belief that he saved souls if they never became full demons.
It turned out that he was caught for years in hell before he found the way out. The day he did and learned that time moved differently, he got a shock, but wanted to believe it was to his luck and Sam would be waiting for him.
One of the reasons he had come back to Sam was the feeling that Dean needed his family, and he knew that Sam would never turn against him. They would be an odd pair, but Dean had insisted that they should continue to hunt, so they did. Both agreed they had to try to stay away from other hunters as long as they could, so it worked well.
A lot of things were different, but both were happy they could be a family and keep on going. They had some advantage against other hunters, but if they ever got questioned, they never told the truth. During that time, they learned what they had to stay away from, especially if they, or rather Dean, was not to fall under any hunter's scrutiny and become the same as Sam - have a price on himself.
Now they were on the road, driving during the day, even if it was sunny outside. Sam caught glimpses in the rear mirror, looking at his brother and seeing his skin pink and sparkly, like diamonds. They knew that if anyone caught them and understood what Dean was, they would very soon be hunted and killed. So far they had managed to survive, with Dean doing what Edward had taught him, surviving on animals, and at least Dean knew that was better than what he had to live on in hell.
Watching his brother trying to lay low in the backseat made Sam smile. Sam knew he loved Dean, even if he sparkled, Dean was his brother no matter what.
