THE RABBIT

Sakuno was sure it was in one of the boxes that were at the bottom of the built-in wardrobe. She kneeled carefully and introduced half body inside the enclosed place, to pull them one by one. She felt the weight of her round belly, and some movement inside her, as if her baby was complaining about the position, and she patted it softly.

“Be patient” she whispered. “I'll finish quickly.”

“May I know what you're doing?”

The stern voice of her husband, muffled by the wardrobe walls, reached her and, instinctively she cringed, like a child caught making mischief. It was true that the doctor had told her not to make efforts, but kneeling in front of a wardrobe looking for a box was not really that.

Slowly, she came out of the cubicle and lifted her head to Genichirou as she put a loose strand of hair behind her ear, and smiled lightly. He was frowning, with his arms crossed on his chest. It was not a good sign.

“I was looking for a box.”

“And why didn't you tell me? I could do it. The doctor said-”

“I... know what he said” she interrupted him with a soft voice. “But I'm not disabled, I'm pregnant.”

“And about to be due. What if you make an awkward movement and fall on your stomach, or start having contractions for pulling a box?”

“Sorry” she lowered her head.

Genichirou sighed and kneeled beside her.

“That's ok, but don't do it again” he made a sign and she moved to the side. “Now, which box is it?”

“I don't know” she looked inside the dark space. “It's one of those.”

He nodded and introduced his body inside the wardrobe, taking two boxes and pulling till they were in front of her.

“Take a look inside.”

She opened them and found old notebooks and books. She slided her fingers along the kanji and lifted the cover of a children's diary. The first page had a drawing of a doll and her name written in big, irregular hiragana, and she could not help a smile. He looked inside too.

“Your old school supplies?”

She nodded with a grin, and closed the boxes. He took two more out, and took the ones already revised and put them inside again. A small exclamation told him his wife had found what she was looking for. When he sat up again, he saw she had a white teddy rabbit on her hands, lookingat it with fondness. Her cheeks were rosy and her eyes twinkled with delight. Then, she lowered it to her lap.

“My grandmother gave it to me when I was born. It was my first toy” a small smile drew across his lips. “It... became my companion when my parents started to be busier and brought me to my grandma's house frequently. And it was with me every single minute when they divorced and I started living with her...”

Her voice trembled for a moment and he felt the need to rub her back to ease the pain of not having a happy family that was still in her heart.

“When I grew up, I decided that my children would have it. To find the joy and comfort it brought me in those years.” she looked at him with bright eyes. “I wanted to find it before our baby was born, to put it beside her during her first night.”

He put the boxes in their place and closed the fusuma, then, he got up.

“Come on, we have to leave it beside the bag at the door, so we don't forget it.”

She smiled widely and before she could make a movement, he took her hand and lifted her as if she weighed nothing. She squeezed the teddy rabbit against her chest and followed him towards the corridor.

“Now our baby girl has her two first toys” he looked at her curiously and she continued. “Your brother gave me the teddy dog that you had when you were three. It's really cute.”

“He did what?!”

THE END

*** According to my headcanon, Sakuno and Sanada had a daughter first ^^ Also, Sakuno's parents are divorced and she started living with Sumire when she was four/five (I read that in Japan, when parents divorce, there's the possibility that the grandparents take care of the children).
