If it turns out Kaname's plan goes the way of the theory I described, then in the end Yuuki might have the choice to either step up to her beliefs and be the one to make the final decision of whether the purebloods etc. must live (for which she would kill Kaname and then sort of rule over vampire society), or be unable to make that choice and then he could kill the purebloods and die for Yuuki so she's human and free of both the need for blood, lonely eternity and the dangers of the vampire world. Either way, it would end with him dying directly or indirectly for her. Which is perhaps what he meant by saying he'd be back and asking for her to wait for his return, when he left the house in volume 14. (There's also the matter of the key from his bedroom which he entrusted to Yuuki. I wonder what it opens and when we'll see more about it...)
It would make total sense for him to try and push her away if there's that option of her killing him and of the purebloods living, because if it goes towards such a route he would need to have Yuuki convinced that he is a monster, or she would feel terrible about killing him. If he can convince her that he is bad and that there's no hope to bring him back, and so if as a result she kills him with the belief she's doing something painful but for the greater good, and no longer loving him or having hope of being with him, she would suffer less and have less regrets than if he gets killed (by her, himself or another) with her still loving him and wanting to be with him.
Where Kaname's plan is flawed, is that it's not working to make Yuuki stop loving him, she's not throwing him away as he was hoping she would. ^^
Ultimately, even if it's not his choice to make but hers, Kaname tries to protect Yuuki however he can, possibly because he's so afraid that she'd chose instead something that might cause her death. (Like in all his despair and fear that she'd go get herself killed, of which they were talking about just before he showed her his past.)
But he always tried to let her chose her life for herself even back when she was human and he offered her to stay human or become a vampire (up until Juri's spell backfired and nearly destroyed her, at which point he had no choice but to bite her to save her). And also after she was back to being a vampire, he was saying she would go out etc. etc., the whole thing of being so much in the house was only temporary while she was still getting used to being a pureblood, and while things were so dangerous and unstable. People tend to view that as being some indication of him wanting to control all her life, but he never said that.
So I think there's quite a chance that now too, he may be looking like he's making the choices because he's so terribly protective, but that in truth he might be simply setting in place safety measures around Yuuki to let her make the choice safely. (Such as when she went to see the other purebloods, and almost bit Zero. Kaname was watching over all along to make sure she would be safe outside but he didn't stop her, even though a possessive lover might have done that when seeing his loved one with his rival. A truly possessively I-must-choose-for-you-person wouldn't have let any of all that happen, even the risky trip to see the purebloods.)
In which case even though it may look like he's choosing her life for her, he might in fact simply be setting up a huge plan so that she's safe regardless of what she chooses, and so that she has the final choice of how she wants to live her life, and even how he will die. ^^;
After all, Kaname has never been the King in the chessboard. Yuuki has always been the King, the most important piece that's weaker and requires protection but that is the one and only reason for it all, the only piece that's not expendable. Kaname has always been the Queen in the chessboard. The most powerful piece that you use to take out any other piece and to protect the King, and which you sacrifice at one point or another in the game... ^^;
Hopefully she can stop him before any tragic plan(s) can come to completion!!
I totally agree with all you said, and was so enjoying your analysis, until you pointed out Yuuki was the King. GREAT conclusion! It's so right, she's the main character, the most important piece who is weaker and requires protection.
And Kaname is the Queen. Exactly, I understand what you mean. But well, I like how this sentence sounds!
"Kaname is the Queen" "Kaname is the Queen" *repeats it over and over* Yes, sounds very well!
