He has already framed himself for murder before by officially taking the blame for Ouri's death even though we know it was Sara who killed Ouri. ^^/ (And claiming he killed Ouri would also frame him for the biting & resulting death of the hunter who was caught in that mess too, so it's likely to get the HA on his case also.) So it wouldn't be a surprise if he framed himself more than once.
Whether Aidou-dono's death was real (for some reason that hasn't been explained yet), or was just an illusion, having it happening in front of Yuuki and Hanabusa, would be an effective method to shock everyone and try to push them all away from him. Even with that, Yuuki still tried to leave with him. So imagine if he had just left on his plan to kill the purebloods, without first establishing that new bad reputation so that he's shunned by the vampire society etc. ^^; Maybe he feared Yuuki would have tried to join him in his path to self-destruction, even at the risk of turning all the society against her too. At any rate, by shocking them so much and leaving them behind, he has established for the hunters and for the vampire society that they are separate from him, and not to be held as any form of accomplices. It sort of protects them from being viewed with the same scorn he is being viewed now. The only ones sharing the same difficult path with him, are ones who volunteered for it. (At least Luca volunteered by her own choice. Cain most likely did too once he knew of her decision to help with Kaname's plan.)
Kaname has been trying to do all he can to convince Yuuki that he's despicable and that she should give up on him. This might possibly be so that their parting and his eventual death according to the plan would be less painful to her, or possibly simply with the hope that she might actually kill him herself if she is convinced he is bad.
So, it makes sense that he would do such a thing right in front of her, (whether it was an illusion or whether it was real for some reason we don't know of).
I have the theory that Kaname's final plan might be more complicated than only 'kill the purebloods + die to turn Yuuki human and that's it'. It might have two levels/two possible routes, that more obvious one being the basic/less desirable version in case Yuuki turns out to be weak and thus needs him to pick what he believes would be the best method to ensure she is safe (ie, a world without purebloods and with her safely back to being human), but that if she turns out to be strong and stand up for her beliefs/be willing to make the world be the way she wants to and believes is best, then she would always have the choice to interrupt his plan by killing him, and 'inherit' a vampire society in which only the less dangerous purebloods are left. (This might be why Kaname didn't go after Isaya that day, and why he didn't finish Touma off when he easily could have. Oherwise it's so odd why he left Touma alive in particular, when he would have been such an easy kill then.)
It's as if he's trying to make everyone believe he's really going to kill everybody, but deep inside he doesn't want to, and is hoping Yuuki will stop him before he has to. ^^;
