Have you ever seen an anime by Tomino? The guy is known as "kill 'em all Tomino" because he repeatedly kills off entire casts for absolutely no reason.
In 1 Series there is like 3 deaths until the last 2 episodes and then the entire main cast dies except for 4 characters, it's just a massive blood bath.
In Ideon he goes one step further and destroys the entire universe to end the series. Like, everything just goes poof up in smoke :/
So losing 1 character in episode 20 is nothing compared to seeing the entire cast die in pathetic ways. And that doesn't even account for Victory Gundam where he kills like 10 women off in 5 episodes, all of who were rather important and worth keeping around.
The name sounds familuar for some reason, though it doesn't really ring any bells...Also I'm not really one for Gundam unless it's Gundam Wing - and even there I still haven't seen the entire thing all the way through...
But I was mainly referring to stuff like FMA, Wolf's Rain, Death Note, Cowboy Bebop...I'm sure there's more.
FMA anime just loses the plot so you can't really judge it's deaths remotely fairly. Manga is much better.
As for the others, well I haven't bothered with anything but Bebop as they don't interest me at all and I don't care to get involved with a fanbase full of drooling idiots.
He did more than Gundam, he's just most famous for it because he started the real robot genre with it.
Saddly he has now given up on killing everyone and just makes robots do the monkey to catchy tunes.
I'm not a huge fan of Mecha anime anyway, Unless of course we're talking about Escaflowne...a fandom I have neglected for quite a while back, dammit I never did get my DVD's back T~T FUCK.

But you should try King gainer, excellent anime and a great spin on the classic boy finds robot story.
