During the New York Draft Riots of 1863, an anti-war mob rampaged through the streets of Manhattan for days in response to the first conscription in U.S. history. The rioters began attacking the staunchly pro-war New York Times building, threatening to burn down the premises. Before much damage could be done, though, the mob fell back. They were dispersed chiefly by the presence of Gatling guns stationed at the Times' entrance.
