Melvin is on reservist for a total of 4 weeks spread out over 5 weeks. So I had the option to cycle to work and try out the bike housing service at
Bike Boutique.
When Melvin first took on this service 3 months ago, I thought the pricing was over the roof. To park your bicycle, you had to pay $73 per month under the quarterly package or $80 per month under the monthly package. This excludes locker rental. My motorcycle requires like $16 per month or something. The math doesn't add up in my head.
So my plan: set alarm at 7am, pack and leave the house at 730am. What I didn't expect was the sight of the beach in the morning and the cool sea breeze that hits my face once I exit the underpass. I never felt better!
And the taichi-dancing-stretching groups (I don't really know what kind of exercises they are doing) differentiated by the 'uniforms' they are wearing. This group here is in red and they do their thing outside BFD, in case you're interested to join in.
What I also didn't expect was the heavy traffic along
Nicoll Highway. I was perspiring heavily, not from the bicycle ride, but from the nervousness I feel with the cars and the buses tailgating, overtaking, squeezing, horning and harassing my BMC and me. As I struggled and fought for space past the cars, I told myself to use the pedestrian the next day (which I did). All through the bike ride, I was planning my route for the days after to improving the safety and the enjoyability of it all.
I made it to Bike Boutique in one piece. The showering facilities there, is top notch. Towels, shower gel and shampoo's provided, the rain shower and heater won me over. What was amusing, were the men in that tiny space. They come in sweaty, they head to the shower (there's only 2), and they come out wrapped in white towels. I don't really know where to avert my eyes, or hide, I just tip toe around a lot and hurry my way out. Then I'm back on quaint and calm Amoy Street and my mood balances out again. I rate cycling to work a 9.5/10. 0.5 goes to the traffic woes.
