I didn't buy a rail pass this week, and decided that it was time to attempt walking to uni again, in an effort to save money and atone for my sins of wine, chocolate, and pasta. So I memorised a route using Google Maps and set off this afternoon, and happily the walk was pleasant enough and took about 25 minutes, which is about the same as using the train, so clearly the train saves me no time and only spares my legs.
And then the rain began.
Now, I'm from the tropics and I've lived in England: I am no stranger to rain. But there is a world of difference between English drizzle, almost never heavy enough to be a problem, and real rain. And there is a world of difference between driving in real rain, and walking in it. The former can be scary but at least you're dry. The latter proved near impossible. The streets around here are uneven, and were flowing with rain. My Enormous Uni Backpack has its own raincoat, a clever device, but my umbrella was close to useless. I suppose I need a raincoat. However, there is a peculiar pleasure in coming home and taking off all your wet things and getting into bed, or having a cup of tea, or eating some pasta (macaroni and cheese -- and I've got lasagna in the oven. Note to self: buy vegetables). It's good weather to practice Latin vocabulary, or read Gothic fiction, so that's what I'm going to do.
