I may have to come back when I have more coherent thoughts, but just wanted to say thanks again for responding in such depth. It's like finding out what life's like on the other side of the looking glass! When I started on LJ, I didn't even know how to find an icon. And then I started surfing a few of the icon comms for my fandom (smallville) and got to know some of the iconists. That was great for a while but I was always hungry for more, so I would follow their links to other comms or competitions or just other iconists they recommended. And I started finding 'bigger' iconists, with multi-fandom work, as you describe. It's very addictive to surf through people's stuff, and when I find someone knew whose work I like, it gives me a real thrill. But I didn't really understand things from their perspective, as I've never even *tried* to make my own icon--so thanks for the explanation and giving me a vicarious experience of that world! I hope you don't mind if I friend you.
