This is the intro!
*
One day when I was six years old, my mother bought a book for me. It was called So Far from the Bamboo Grove, and it was about a girl fleeing Korea with her family during World War II. Twenty-eight pages in, doctors ripped the corpse of a woman's baby from her arms and threw it out the window of a moving train while she hung on and screamed, and screamed. "Wake up, Hideki, wake up, you need to eat!" She tried to offer the infant her breast.
But arms closed in and flung the little bundle away, blanket trailing absurdly behind like Superman's forgotten cape.
Later I pretended I was Supergirl. I built a wall around Korea so that no soldiers could ever get in.

I'm thinking of using this as the intro for my college essay, too, as it also works quite well for a piece about competence...

writing,
