Give...kinda sounds like it's about someone trying to buy off karma That's the impression I got, too. It sounded very self-righteous, actually.
Welcome to England [...] it's about someone who's in a relationship with a person who doesn't reciprocate. I thought it was about people who take advantage of you and put unreasonable expectations on you, but in a platonic relationship (because the object of the song is not the singer's lover according to the lyrics).
Strong Black Vine I haven't listened to this one much, but I agree with you interpretations.
Flavor Agree with everything you say. "Flavor" is one of my favorite songs on the album. I get images of beautiful nebulae and stars listening to it <3
Not Dying Today Took me a minute to like this song, but now I adore it <3
Maybe California [...] I'm tearing up right now. This one broke my heart, too.
Curtain Call [...] I'm thinking it's about watching someone self-destruct. I thought "media exploitation of women".
Fire to Your Plain- This one's got a pretty upbeat tune, although it's still got an air of melancholy about it. I thought so, too.
I'm stuck on the interpretation, though. Help? I thought it was about admiring a fearless woman.
Police Me [...] I think it's about those members of society who anoint themselves as moral police That is pretty much what she said it was about. "Being encoded" was her term; that these hateful social norms are programmed into kids from Day One.
That Guy [...] I'd say It's about being in a volatile relationship with one of those guys whose personality changes after they get you to commit- "That guy can't seem to see, there are no other guys but the one he used to be." I like the ending. Tori said in an interview that she was thinking of men being emasculated and disempowered, inspired by the economy. I don't think it's just getting you to commit that changes the personality; after all the couple has a daughter in the song, so they've probably been together awhile. Personally I think of back when my parents were still fighting all the time because my father was depressed, and he expressed it through anger instead of sorrow.
Abnormally Attracted to Sin [...] Sounds kind of like a surrealist video game. IAWT.
Um... I'm confused about the meaning here. It sounds a bit like it's about the difficulties of developing a healthy sexuality when you're raised to believe that lust/non-normative sexualities are sinful. [...] Or maybe I should rephrase that and suggest that it's about the difficulties of growing up with a non-normative sexuality if you were raised to believe such things were sinful... Yeah, I think it's about reconciling spirituality and sexuality. I like applying it to As The World Turns :D and see it as being about coming out of the closet.
500 Miles [...] It seems to be depicting love as a journey Exactly. The comparisons and metaphors are fill-in-the-blanks, I feel; insert-your-own-event-here.
Mary Jane- Tori Amos hasn't even started singing, and what I want to know is, is this song about marijuana? Yes.
Starling THIS SONG IS HISOKA. END OF STORY.
Fast Horse I think of this one as being about girls who'd rather go out with desirable-according-to-popular-opinion guy who's a committment-phobic disrespectful ass, instead of an actual, grounded guy who will stick around and treat you well.
Ophelia Same here.
Lady in Blue- Industrial!Tori Amos is haunting. Wow. The instrumentation says "darkened factories next to even darker oceans" to me. Another melancholy, slightly jazzy song. The lyrics and vocal color make me think of hushed conversations in or just outside one of these darkened factories, but I'm not getting much more than that I image a lot of blue light and an underground bar. I feel like the meaning to this song is obvious but it's eluding me D:
Welcome to England- I use 'in a relationship' to mean any kind of relationship, most of the time. I couldn't really tell which kind it was from the lyrics though, so thanks for telling me. :P
Flavor- I totally agree with the celestial images. Listening to it again, the instrumentation is also kinda reminiscent of Evanescence's Your Star, which always makes me think of long, lonely walks at night...
Curtain Call- Works too. This was one of the ones I had trouble with...
That Guy- Had trouble with this one too. The marital conflict interpretation definitely seems fitting though, now that I'm looking at the lyrics again.
Abnormally Attracted to Sin- ...I wanna see ATWT. Danged kids, taking up the TV all the time! xP
Starling- AGREED, ALTHOUGH I ALREADY ASSOCIATE SO MANY PIECES WITH HISOKA THAT IT SEEMED A LITTLE CHURLISH TO PUT THAT DOWN. |D
Fast Horse- Fits. It reminds me of The Hush Sound's Molasses, with that interpretation.
Lady in Blue- I feel like the meaning to this song is obvious but it's eluding me D:
AGREED. :( I felt like I was missing something that was right in front of me...
