Summary: Yunho had to pay the price when Jae Joong and Hyun Joong went against fate
Yunho could only watch as Jae Joong laugh at what Hyun Joong just said. He could only admire the pale beauty from far. His heart broke looking at the two men together. And it broke even more knowing that once upon a time it was he who was beside Jae Joong, making him laugh, smile and blush. But as of late, all he was capable of doing was cause the beautiful male to cry, to be hurt and filled with pain. And upon Jae Joong’s own request, he had reluctantly let the man go.
The feeling of soft velvet tickled his fingertips as he stroke the box in his pants pocket. A wave of sadness washed over him at the memory of the box.
Upon coming back from his last mission, Yunho had stopped by the jewelry shop and bought the ring he had ordered before the mission. He was going to propose to the love of his life. Yunho knew how much Jae Joong disliked his job as a secret service agent to the government and because of that, he had asked for transfer to another division, one that required him to work office hours and sit behind a desk with a much lesser pay. But the moment he had entered the house, he found his soon-to-be fiancé crying and asking for a break up. Apparently, Jae Joong had had enough of everything and called it quits. Yunho had fought tooth and nail, telling Jae Joong that everything was going to change from then on. But the damage had been done. And their relationship lay in tatters the moment Jae Joong stepped out of the apartment.
The long weeks that Yunho had been gone on missions and the constant fear that something would happen to Yunho was too much for Jae Joong to bear. And much to Yunho’s dismay, Jae Joong hooked up with his friend, Kim Hyun Joong. Yunho thought that the man was only in the rebound stage but their relationship seemed to have blossomed over the couple of weeks and Yunho could only watch as the love of his life held another man’s hand. Yet, some illogical force told him to keep the ring.
Jae Joong looked at his former lover from the corner of his eye. His heart skipped a beat at the sight of the taller man in a suit. Yunho always was a killer when he was in a suit with the wicked sunglasses perched on his nose bridge.
“Jae Joong ah, I’m going to go and get us some drinks.” Hyun Joong suddenly said in front of him.
“Ah, yeah. Thanks.” Jae Joong smiled at his boyfriend. When Hyun Joong had vacated his seat to get the drinks, Jae Joong allowed himself to fully look at Yunho again before averting his gaze to the newlyweds in front of him.
Jung Min and Young Saeng were mingling with the guests. Hyun Joong’s younger brother looked good with Jae Joong’s childhood friend. The couple looked every bit as sweet just standing there with contented smiles gracing their faces and the secret glances that they share when they thought people weren’t looking.
In a way, Jae Joong was jealous over the couple. He was reminded of the times he and Yunho were like that, all sweet and innocent. Truth to be told, Jae Joong was shocked to see Yunho at the wedding. But then Hyun Joong’s father had told him that Yunho was Mr. Kim’s personal assistant.
Jae Joong sighed. He knew he had been a coward by leaving Yunho just because of the man’s job. He knew Yunho worked hard to keep the citizens of Korea safe but Jae Joong wished Yunho didn’t have to. Jae Joong wanted a family with Yunho but that dream was still just a dream. He wanted stability, a family and most importantly the man himself. But weeks of absence on Yunho’s part and the nature of his job had put a strain on their relationship and it drove Jae Joong stark raving mad. So he did the only thing he knew. Run and find someone who fit his criteria. And just at that time, he found solace in his best friend and they became an item just weeks after the break up. Only after that did he got to know that Yunho no longer worked for the government and that he had moved out of the apartment that they had once shared. He had lost contact with the man.
Until today.
Doubt began to dance in Jae Joong’s mind the moment he had seen Yunho again. After so long, he still found his heart fluttering every time he caught sight of the man. Did he really love Hyun Joong or was he just using the man to get over Yunho? And what of his feelings towards his ex? Did he still love Yunho? If he still does love Yunho then he would have hurt Hyun Joong. And he couldn’t risk their friendship.
The sudden sound of screeching tires and people screaming brought Jae Joong out of his reverie. He could see everyone running helter skelter as a BMW swerved and ran over the wine table. The glasses broke into trillion of pieces, covering the whole bonnet. Jae Joong quickly ran, eyes scanning for Yunho and Hyun Joong.
The car was still rolling and much to Jae Joong’s horror, the car headed straight to a frozen Hyun Joong who happened to be in its path.
“HYUN JOONG AH!” Jae Joong screamed and ran towards the man. He somehow felt like he wasn’t going to reach Hyun Joong in time and the car was getting closer by the second. Suddenly, a blur of black pushed Hyun Joong away before the car hit the man full force. Hyun Joong had landed safely a few feet away. Jae Joong felt like he was watching a movie in slow motion. Hyun Joong’s savior was thrown onto the car’s roof and rolled off the back before landing on the ground. The car at last stopped when it hit the tree a few meters away.
An eerie silence enveloped the whole area as everyone collected themselves. Jae Joong went on autopilot and helped Hyun Joong to sit up.
“Are you okay?” He asked. Hyun Joong was shaking badly, but he seemed to be alright.
“The… the guy…” Hyun Joong stuttered. In his haste to get to Hyun Joong, Jae Joong had forgotten about the man who had been hit by the car. He was just about to turn his head when Young Saeng’s cry rang shrill in the air.
“SOMEONE CALL AN AMBULANCE! PLEASE!” everyone there looked at the young lad, with Jung Min beside him and on Young Saeng’s lap was the unmistakable form of Yunho who was bleeding all over the other two men from what seemed to be from wounds on his chest and head.
“No…” Jae Joong breathed. Half slipping he got to the three men. Yunho seemed worse than he thought. His life force seeping from the wounds, making him closer to death with every drop that leaves his body.
“Yunho… Yunho… Yunho! No, don’t do this! You have to open your eyes!” Jae Joong said, his eyes wild.
“Yunho, did you hear me. You can’t do this to me! Yunho!” Jae Joong began to yell and sob at the same time. His hands clasped over Yunho’s limp and bloody one and cried harder when he felt how cold it was.
Jae Joong became even more hysterical when the paramedic told him he couldn’t follow the injured man into the ambulance. He didn’t want to be separated from Yunho even for a second, scared that the man might leave him forever. Jae Joong was only vaguely aware of being manhandled into a car and being driven to the hospital.
For the past two hours, all he did was pace the hallway in front of the operating room, cry on Hyun Joong’s shoulder, then stop and started pacing again while biting his nails and sniffling every few seconds. He had finally calmed down when Hyun Joong forced a cup of hot chocolate in his hands and made him sit down.
“What is taking them so long! I mean… what if something bad happened in there!” Jae Joong fussed.
“Jae Joong ah, calm down. And have faith in Yunho. He’s a strong guy, he’ll pull through.” Hyun Joong said assuringly.
Jae Joong sighed and let himself rest against the chair. “I messed up big time.” Jae Joong said tiredly.
“Don’t say that. We both messed up. We weren’t meant to be together in the beginning and I guess we were never meant to be. But we were pushing fate and the only regret that I have is that Yunho has to pay for what wrong we both did.”
“Hyun Joong…” Jae Joong’s eyes were fixed on the man beside him.
“I know I could never have you. It has always been Yunho in your heart. Like how Kyu Jong will always be in mine. We both were using each other. You had just broken up with Yunho and me with Kyu Jong. But right now, we can only hope that we can have the time to make things right.”
They stayed in silence as Hyun Joong’s words seeped into both their souls. The light of the operating theatre suddenly went off and a petite lady doctor still in her scrubs came out of the room. Both Jae Joong and Hyun Joong went to her the moment she called out Yunho’s name.
“How is he?” Both of them asked in unison.
“His lung collapsed due to being punctured by a broken rib and he has a concussion but thankfully a minor one since his chest took the brunt of it. We almost lost him on the table but he’s stable now. We pushed him into the ICU.”
“Can we see him?” Jae Joong asked hopefully.
“I would suggest not to… but… I will make an exception. Only one at a time.”
“Thank you, Doctor.”
“He’s in room 501. By the way, this was inside his pocket when we cut off his clothes. I think it’s really special to him since it’s the only thing we could find on him.”
The doctor held out a small red velvet box to the two men and Jae Joong took it with shaking hands. The doctor gave them a small smile before leaving. Curiosity got the better of them and Jae Joong slowly opened the box while Hyun Joong peered from his side. Inside the box was a beautiful silver band with the words “윤재 영원히” engraved on it. Jae Joong gently closed the box and palmed it. He took a deep breath to stop the tears which had clung to his lashes.
“Go to him, Jae.” Hyun Joong said softly and gave Jae Joong a nudge. Jae Joong could only give a grateful smile before leaving Hyun Joong by himself.
Hyun Joong slowly sat on the seat he had vacated just now and buried his face in his hands. The ordeal today had been scary and something he wouldn’t forget for the rest of his life. He owed Yunho his life and he would find a way to repay it.
He wasn’t left in his tumulus thought for long. He suddenly heard someone running down the hall and stopped right in front of him. The stranger was gasping for air.
“Hyun Joong ah.” The stranger called and Hyun Joong’s head snapped up. He found himself looking at Kyu Jong. The latter sat beside his lover and put a comforting hand on Hyun Joong’s back.
“Are you okay?” Kyu Jong asked, everything about him was shouting concern for the other man. Hyun Joong could no longer avoid the inevitable. He buried his head in Kyu Jong’s chest and cried his heart out.
“Don’t leave me!” he sobbed and Kyu Jong could only rub circles on his lover’s back.
“I won’t. I’m here… everything’s going to be alright.”
*
Jae Joong hated the machines that were beeping noisily in the background. He despised the tubes and wires which covered Yunho. He absolutely loathed the oxygen tube on Yunho’s nose and the bandage on Yunho’s head. It all made Yunho look terrifyingly small and weak. Something which Yunho was not.
Jae Joong rubbed Yunho’s knuckles and wished that his hands were warm like usual. He wanted so much to look into those brown orbs which were always filled with so much love and care. He needed to hear Yunho’s voice again.
When Yunho’s fingers suddenly tightened on Jae Joong’s fingers, the pale beauty looked up.
“Yunnie, are you awake?” he whispered softly.
“Joong… Joongie?” Yunho’s voice was raspy and hoarse.
Jae Joong couldn’t help but let his tears fall freely as gratefulness washed over him. Yunho opened his eyes with much difficulty, but he managed. Jae Joong subtly wiped away his tears.
“Are you in pain? I should call the doctor. ”
“No… Don’t leave me. I’m not in pain… just fuzzy.” Came the weak reply.
Jae Joong kissed Yunho’s cheeks softly and held Yunho’s hand slightly tighter. He brought out the velvet box out of his pocket and put it in Yunho’s palm.
“The ring…?” Yunho asked somewhat quizzically.
“Yes. I want you propose to me like you planned.”
“Right now…? I’m not lucid enough Joongie…”
“No, I want you to do it now. It would mean a lot to me.”
“I can’t really move and I might not remember this moment.”
“Please. I promise you, you won’t forget it.” Jae Joong pleaded.
Yunho sighed and tried his best to stay conscious. “Kim Jae Joong, would you marry me?”
“Yes. Yes I will marry you!” Jae Joong cried and helped himself to put on the ring.
“I love you.” Jae Joong kissed Yunho again.
“I love you too.”
Jae Joong smiled despite Yunho falling into the realm of unconsciousness again. Everything was going to be alright.
