Spending a lot of time at the movies

Well, good news, ladies and gentlemen. "Brokeback Mountain" finally made its long-overdue appearance at a movie theater in my area. So me and my family trekked down to the Rio to see it. And frankly, I enjoyed it a lot. It took me a while to get used to the pacing (and later, Jake Gyllenhaal's moustache, which made him look like a mariachi player), but once I settled in it was great. It's a heartbreaking movie to watch, folks. I mentioned to a friend just a few minutes ago that I didn't cry at the movie, although I've found that these days I'm much more likely to cry at sad movies ("Rent", for instance, and even a little at "King Kong"). But the explanation for that, I think, is that I was actually too heartbroken to cry. The saddest part of the entire film was that the characters never found the resolution they were yearning for all throughout it. The last line really hit home for me- because I realized I wanted that resolution as much as they did.

Before I leave you (and I probably won't find my way back until the New Year), I wanted to let you know that I've rated the movies I've seen so far this break. Here's what it adds up to:

"The Chronicles of Narnia 1"- 8/10
"King Kong"- 9/10
"Brokeback Mountain"- 8/10

"Narnia" and "Brokeback" were both well above average- in fact, they were both great- but when I took it all into consideration I found that Peter Jackson's extraordinarily lengthy new movie had a slight edge above both of them. I'll update next week with my opinions on the fourth movie I plan to see over break, "The Producers".

Happy New Year!
