From there to Konoha

a/n  This falls after the Strip oneshot and before all the others. So enjoy.    I should probably figure out how to put these all in chapters so that you can flip from one to the other...anyone know how to do that?  Comments always welcome and ideas even more so for stories.  The characters belong to Kishimoto sensei

Sasuke glared at the Hokage. A six month undercover mission as a damn exotic dancer was not something he found amusing. The old bat had dared smile at him when he had finished reading the details of the mission. “Why me,” he had demanded.

“You’re one of the best looking shinobi we have” she replied with an evil fox like grin.

Sasuke had bit his lip to keep from retorting something less than respectful. He had bowed slightly and left before the anger in him over being given such a ridiculous mission could explode.

Iruka had been with him for the first two months but then school had started and he returned to Konoha with Kakashi. There was little there that he could accomplish that Sasuke couldn’t accomplish on his own. Besides, Sasuke was getting royally tired of listening to him and Kakashi playing chase the ninja.

He finished recalling the last three months with a sigh. He had finished all his mission objectives but one. And that one had some unexpected complications to it. A giggling burble brought him back to the present as a blue-eyed baby held up her hands to him. He swooped down, picking her up with a slight toss that always made her laugh. He snuggled her into his chest where she promptly drifted off to sleep in that way that baby’s had that allowed them to drop off to sleep in .05 seconds flat. He walked back into his apartment and tucked one of his complications into her bed. All he had left was a hit and run mission on the office to grab some scrolls too important to be left behind. But he couldn’t risk her and there weren’t a lot of other options.  He had written the Hokage telling her he needed a back-up. Any chunin or jounin would do. Now all he had left to do was wait for help to arrive.

Kakashi crept into his former student’s apartment. He soundlessly moved toward the living room deftly avoiding the common traps in the kitchen. He was pleased to note that Sasuke had added some rather creative variations to the ones he had left set up when he and Iruka pulled out.

“You don’t need to be quiet, Sensei, I’m still awake,” a tired voice drifted in from the living room. Kakashi frowned and padded into the living room. Sasuke was stretched out on the couch, a small bundle held close to his chest. Kakashi’s eye widened considerably when the bundle fidgeted and mewled pathetically. Sasuke stroked it in a soothing motion.

“Sasuke?” Kakashi questioned, moving closer to inspect the fitful child.

“She’s teething” Sasuke murmured and gave his sensei a tired look. “Don’t suppose you have any low dose painkillers? I ran out.”

“No” he shook his head hands forming quick seals before reaching out to settle one of them on the little one’s back. Slowly the fevered blush faded from her cheeks as she settled into sleep, pain eased by the healing jutsu. Sasuke breathed a sigh of relief.

Kakashi settled into a chair beside them. “Who does she belong to?”

“Mine” Sasuke replied. “She was part of my complications with this damn mission.” He cuddled her for a moment more before rising and taking her to bed. He returned and headed toward the kitchen. “Her mother was my neighbor and fellow stripper.” Sasuke shrugged, “Kari wandered over one day and just never left.” Kakashi raised an eyebrow at the thought of so young a child wandering anywhere. Sasuke gave a ghost of a grin before continuing “Mom ended up in a back alley somewhere with no one claiming to have seen anything or know who the kid belonged to.” Sasuke remembered that scene far too vividly; it haunted his nightmares more than he cared to admit. In the worst of them, he arrived too late to stop the thug’s knife from piercing the crying angel, silencing her voice forever. He fingered the scar on his hand, remembered fear a bitter taste in his mouth.

“So you claimed her,” Kakashi finished.

The 18 year old shrugged again, his eyes far too old in his pale face, “She needed me.” Kakashi heard those words, understanding far more than any other explanation that could have been given. He hadn’t missed the absentminded rubbing of the hand or the shadows that haunted the young man’s eyes. Shadows he was far too familiar with from one too many times of looking in the mirror or his own lover’s eyes. He drank the proffered tea reflecting on his own complication, a bitter sweet smile ghosting across his lips at the memory of the night he left for this extraction mission.

Sasuke washed the tea things and put them away. Calling it a night, the two men stretched out on futons next to the baby. “Does this make me a grandfather?” Kakashi pondered unhappily. He wasn’t that old even if his hair was white.

“Godfather,” Sasuke corrected, eyes sliding closed into a light sleep. Kakashi could accept godfather; they got to teach the children all kinds of fun things. He remembered Sasuke as a gennin and grinned. Sometimes revenge was a dish best served cold, something that all parents everywhere knew. Why do you think the favored curse of mother’s was ‘I hope you have children just like you!’

Sasuke awoke later than usual. He couldn’t detect Kakashi or Kari in the apartment. He didn’t think he had slept that hard that he wouldn’t have heard them leave. Sure, she had kept him up the past 4 days teething, but he wouldn’t have slept through her waking. He sat up and grabbed the paper that fluttered from his chest. A quick perusal assured him of their whereabouts. He had a feeling from the contents that Kakashi had had something to do with his sleeping in. He glanced at the clock to confirm he had indeed slept until nearly 11 a.m. He padded into the bathroom to take a shower, the first long one he had had in a month. A teething Kari was a clingy Kari was a cranky Kari which translated into a needy Kari which meant Sasuke had not been getting a lot of things done around the house.

Kakashi walked in with a laughing baby and an armful of groceries. Sasuke relieved him of his squirming bundle, “Any problems?”

Kakashi shook his head. His black hair fell about his face. “Everyone accepted that I was your older brother come to help you with the baby,” he put the groceries on the counter and started cooking lunch, “it was clever of you to claim you were her blood father though.”

“Not like anyone here could say any different,” Sasuke finished pulling off her shoes then letting her go. Kari crawled around the room laughing before finding one of her rattles and beating it noisily against the floor. A small smile touched Sasuke’s lips as he watched her antics.”

“You work tonight?” Kakashi handed him a cup of tea.

“Yeah, something’s going to happen tonight. I’ve been asked to do a special performance for an important client,” he snorted derisively, “about 5 of us were asked to whore ourselves for her pleasure.”

“What about Kari?” Kakashi wondered.

“Been paying an elderly neighbor to come watch her, Sasuke shrugged, “though you’ll be watching her tonight.”

“Let’s get this done and get the hell out of here then,” Kakashi replied thoughtfully. “I can leave her with the packs and the dogs. We will pick them up on the way through.”

Sasuke frowned, “can the dogs take care of her?”

“I’ll jutsu her so that she will sleep so it shouldn’t be a problem. Just something to make her sleep until morning when we should be on our way home and out of danger,” he replied.

Sasuke sighed, he wasn’t happy about it but there was nothing he could do. He would just have to make sure that the dogs understood what would happen to them if any harm came to Kari.

“What are you going to do with her when you get back to Konoha?” Kakashi asked, distracting his student from thoughts of maiming Nin dogs. He knew the gleam in the Uchiha’s eyes didn’t bode well for the continued health of his darlings. “Missions are no place for children.”

“I may take her on the ones I can, find someone to watch her on the ones I can’t.” Sasuke shrugged, “I am not the only single parent in Konoha, and if they can do it so can I.”

“You’re probably the only single parent in Anbu though.” Kakashi pointed out.

“Never was one to take the easiest route.” He admitted

Kakashi snorted at this and grinned at him, “I think you have already proven that fact far too many times over.”

Sasuke gathered up all the dignity he could muster, which, at this point wasn’t much, but give the boy points for trying, glared at his teacher before stalking off to put Kari down for a nap.

Kakashi’s grin turned slightly evil, he rubbed his hands together and chortled gleefully to himself rather like a madman who planned to take over the world using a bottle of wine, some old cheese, and an army of Jell-O squares. If anyone had been around they would have known to quietly back away and send for the men in little white coats with the pretty white jacket with buckles.

Later that night, Kakashi was in position listening to the music through his receiver. Sasuke was putting on one hell of a show and making a lot of money. The man could move his body in ways that put contortionists to shame. He was a popular favorite at the Déjà vu club. Kakashi had heard more than one person comment on his flexibility and speculate on what he he could do in bed. He had actually kept track of how many people made that particular comment and was happy to note that Sasuke was equally popular with men as well as women. Although Kakashi wasn’t certain if he would appreciate knowing that fact. He was fairly certain the Uchiha was not a virgin, but he kept his trysts discreet and his lovers didn’t come from Konoha.

All too soon it was time for the private performance. Sasuke couldn’t believe his luck. The old bat in question was none other than one of the heads which ran this ring, which meant that he and Kakashi had a real chance to do some major damage to this drug trade. He pulled off one of the hottest performances of his life which earned him a thousand yen and a whispered offer for sex. It was only his training that managed to put a lust filled face on for her hiding the revulsion that churned in his stomach of the thought of this old hag naked in his bed. He was pretty sure that image had just killed his sex drive for the next year since his cock had just crawled up and was hiding between his balls begging for mercy.

Sasuke quickly changed and made his way into the ceiling. He and Kakashi were going to meet above the office and then drop and hit it in one shot. They should be able to get in and get out in less than 5 minutes. The operation went smoothly, far too smoothly in Sasuke’s mind. They grabbed the stuff and were almost out of the building when all hell broke loose. Someone went into the office earlier than expected and sounded the alarm. The two men found themselves being chased by missing nin. It was a bloody mess getting out of the building leaving half of their pursuers in less than desirable conditions.

They gave their pursuers the slip and picked up Kari and the packs. Sasuke had barely finished securing Kari in the front holder when three kunai whizzed by his head. Only instinct had allowed him to dodge a hairsbreadth before they would have sunk into his skull. He already had a shurikan flung toward his attacker and was pleased to see the man fall with it embedded in one eye. Kakashi hit 3 more with kunai before they both turned and ran. The night turned into a nightmare as Sasuke and Kakashi fought their way to the border, missing nin seemingly in endless supply being thrown at them like cannon fodder. Sasuke was bleeding from miner cuts and scratches, exhausted, and feeling a little guilty as Kari watched some of the battles in the morning light, her eyes a little too bright and more than a little fascinated by the jutsus being flung around. So far, her sling was only sprinkled with blood, thankfully none of it hers, but time was running out and the two men were running on adrenaline and soldier pills.

They made the border and their luck held. 2 Anbu patrols were waiting for them, alerted by the use of chakra from the battle. Sasuke and Kakashi dived between them as the fresher forces meet the charging missing nin in battle. They didn’t stop to watch the battle, knowing that the information they had had to reach the Hokage, soon. The dealings were more than drugs, but information on troop movements in wave country looking like they were planning an attack on Konoha.

It was mid afternoon when the two men stumbled into the Hokage’s office. Tsunade stared at the bloody mess they were making on her floor before sighing heavily. “I am not going to like this, am I,” she mumbled more to herself then to them. She raised an eyebrow at the happy baby burbling away to herself in the sling, merrily chewing on her toes. “Please tell me you don’t have to return it.”

Sasuke grinned tiredly, “No, she comes with the armor.”

Beside her desk, Naruto rolled his eyes under his Anbu mask. “Oi, teme, I don’t think those are standard issue with uniforms anymore.”

Sasuke pulled her out of her sling, resting her on his arm facing forward so that she could look around. She clapped her hands, talking merrily away to anyone who would pay attention. She didn’t seem bothered by the dripping blood that had ruined her pajamas. Sasuke just rolled his eyes at her and grinned. “That’s because they don’t issue them to the dead last.”

Naruto didn’t even flinch at the comment anymore. The two males had long since gotten over themselves with a little help from a pink-haired medic who had literally pounded them into the ground after witnessing one too many of their fights. When they had crawled out of their respective holes she had shoved them into, they had talked. There hadn’t been much else to do considering neither one of them were capable of moving at the moment and they weren’t sure when help was going to arrive or even if it was going to come. The outcome had been a stronger friendship and a greater respect for each other. Coupled with a healthy sense of preservation, the boys had stopped fighting and now the insults were more friendly then anything else.

Naruto reached out his arms to take her. “Come to Uncle Naruto,” he cooed. He tossed her lightly in the air and caught her.

Sasuke glared at him, “Dobe, don’t you dare drop her.”

Naruto rolled his eyes, “Teme, can’t you see she likes it.”

At that point in time, Kari made her feelings known on the entire matter. It didn't help that just a few minutes before they made the wall, she had finished her morning bottle. Sasuke stared at Kari’s breakfast made a return appearance all over the once grinning, once clean, anbu guard. He took her back with a distasteful, yet pleased grin. Kari stared for a moment at the unhappy jounin before she chortled to herself, waving her hands and feet in her amusement. Only sheer will and extensive training stopped the room from falling apart with laughter so that Sasuke and Kakashi could give their reports but it didn’t stop Genma from taking a few pictures to commemorate the event.

In the Anbu office is a special board dedicated to pictures that remind their members that life isn’t always a blood filled hell. It proudly displays Anbu members’, both current and former, less than stellar moments. Naruto’s picture was there before the day was out, proudly pinned next to pictures of Kakashi with purple hair, Neji hanging upside down from a tree when he stepped into a gennin’s rope trap after having been distracted by Lee attempting to challenge Gaara who he declared was his eternal rival, an younger Yondaime covered in slime from one of Kakashi’s jutsu’s gone wrong, and a picture of Hayate dressed as a girl for an undercover operation. No one ever takes the pictures down once they have been pinned there no matter how embarrassing they may be. It’s a small private memorial to life for those who have made a lover out of death.
