Several people have brought up the issue of my reading a biology text over the summer. They claim it is completely illogical and far too anal retentive. I however, have a rather clear reason for doing so.
In my lab, I was working on the synthesis of mutant proteins. Synthesizing mutant proteins requires (in my mind, so as to better understand the work you are carrying out) understanding of protein synthesis. However, for any of that to make sense, one has to understand DNA and RNA systems. While understanding those systems, understanding of basic building blocks of cells (lipids, carbs, etc) is also essential. Not only did I need to know about these, but I also had to learn about many of the modern techniques for use in biotech. I believe that these reasons pose sufficient impetus for me to take the effort and work on biology over the summer. After all, I would like to understand the science behind the research I was working on.
