Victims of Hype?

Are Wolf Parade this year's Arcade Fire? Would it be a good or bad thing if they were (was it a good or bad thing that the Arcade Fire was last year's Arcade Fire?) Who cares. Ignore the hype, listen to the album and decide for yourself.

Let's get the obvious out of the way: Modest Mouse. Done.

The album really finds its own voice on Grounds For Divorce, the third track on the album. To say that this song fucking rules is an understatment. It's a glorious look to the sunny sky and scream with happiness tribute to breakups, sung in a manic David Bowie voice (in reality, only the Wolf Parade might know for sure what the song is about; lyrics this obtuse are open to wide interpretation.) Can it get any better?

Not quite, though there are several moments that approach this dizzying height, and even the more pedestrian songs are solid. Shine A Light is as good a song as the homographic Constantines track, and I'll Believe In Anything may well be the most rocking song in waltz time ever.

What really sets Wolf Parade apart from the average indie band these days are the same things that force comparisons to bands like Arcade Fire and Modest Mouse: there is a sense of honesty and urgency present in all of these songs that just can't be faked. These guys are the real deal.
