he sat on a bench as he does every day. he watched the kids play soccer and the mothers walk their children to and from the playground. a lone woman of an unknown age sat, alone, at a picnic table. one of many in that general area. there were about twelve all next to each other. they are often occupied by large families throwing a birthday party. but today only one was occupied by an unknown woman, in a green dress, her back facing him. his eyes scrolled from one side of the park to the other and as they were wandering back again, they stopped at the woman in the green dress. she was getting up from her table. as she began to walk away, he noticed she had dropped something, something she had not noticed. she continued walking away. he got right up, grabbed what he now knew was a wallet, and jogged over to the woman. "excuse me, miss" he said rather loudly but he got no reaction. he was now close enough to touch her so, with his voice softer now, he said "miss, you dropped this". she turned around, her head hanging low as to hide her face behind her long blonde hair. she sniffled and quickly thanked him in a very low voice. he could barely hear her and knew all too well that something was the matter. "hey, are you alright?" he asked. she nodded, quickly sniffled again, and said "mhm". he knew, clearly, she was in distress and so he focused his eyes on her head for a bit and thought quietly to himself for a moment while she put the wallet away in her purse. "well, okay" he said "but could you do me one really big favor, please?". she said nothing while lifting up her head and wiping the tears away from her eyes like it was nothing at all. her eyes failed to meet his. her face was staring right at his but her eyes were looking far over to her right. he was thrown back. there, in front of him, stood an angel. she was utterly beautiful beyond belief. he lost himself for only an instant, his eyes quickly scanned her whole face and ended back at her eyes and he started up again, "it's embarrassing, I know, but I really am thirsty and want to drink from the fountain, but I have this fear". he paused for a bit to gauge her reaction. there was none and he continued. "I can't go to water fountains by myself. I have to have someone with me." he joked with a straight face "it's a weird phobia I have" he paused again while her eyes met his for the first time. for the first time she saw the face of who had brought her her wallet. the face of who had been talking to her. her expression both changed dramatically but not at all at the same time. it was as if she just got her vision back after being blind for far too long. there eyes stayed locked on each others for seconds. he asked again "will you be so kind as to walk me to the water fountain?" she cracked a slight smile and said, sarcastically "ya, ok". "no! don't laugh" he said "I'm serious! it's a real condition" he paused for only a brief instant to see her reaction. her smile turned into a smirk. "sometimes" he started again, still with a straight and serious face. "sometimes I go for hours, completely parched and oh so thirsty, without water because I have no one to take with me to the fountain" he didn't pause for a reaction this time "and I don't want to just go around asking random strangers!". "well aren't I a stranger?" she asked in a flirtatious sort of way. she had him there and he was disappointed at himself for not anticipating this question. "well... " he let the word drag on for a bit while he thought of what to say. nothing was coming to mind and he said "I meant people strangers, not angel strangers?" his voice got higher as if to be asking a question and his serious face turned into a big smile and they both laughed.
