:( Both my hamsters died. Poor Oreo and Butterscotch. They appeared healthy not long ago. They lived such a short life (I only bought them in March and the pet store "claimed" they were only a month old then). I thought hamsters were supposed to live about 2 years. I wonder if they were sick when I bought them or something ( Read more... )

:( Sorry to hear that. Rest in peace, little hamsters.

They should live about 2 years, but one of the bad things about places like PetSmart are the inbreeding. Since they're buying them from other people. It's not like going to a breeder. I say this as someone that got Jack, my Syrian, from PetSmart. Of course, he defies logic and likes to be held, so. Was their tails/butts wet? Cage stinky? I'm assuming you had dwarf ones.

Mine like being held too. I didn't notice of their tails/butts were wet...and as they are now buried it's a little too late to tell. I am not digging them up to see. Cage was no stinkier than usual. Wednesday and Saturday are normally bedding changing days, the cage was no smellier today than it normally is on a Friday. Mine were from PetsMart too. They were teddy bear hamsters.

Wait, you had teddy bear, the cute name for Syrians...together? That's pretty much a no-no. The older they get, the more solitary they need to be. They're a one hamster per cage species. Dwarf (Robo, Campbell, etc) are fine in colonies. The Syrians could have killed each other, fight to the death over space. Wow, I'm surprised the store didn't tell you that.

Oh. The store told me as long as I bought a big enough cage, it would be okay to keep them together because they were both female and females don't fight like the males do.
