There were pro-gay rights rallies and protests around the nation and around the world today, including one with around 6-7 hundred folks up here in the small corner of California that is Humboldt county. It didn't feel like such a small corner though, what with the enthusiasm of those gathered with their signs and their flags and their voices competing with the nearly constant stream of support in the form of car horns coming from 101 (it goes right through the center of Eureka). We yelled and cheered and danced and waved our myriad of signs and took over the entire block in front of the court house.
It felt powerful and energizing. It's good to go out and be angry and stomp feet with other people who think as you do sometimes, because it reminds us that we are not alone. It's a lot easier to tell the guy who yells "Go to hell queers" that you love him too if you are amidst a group committed to non violent resistance.
But the reason that I felt it worthy to make a post about is that nearly 1/3 of the people I saw were at least over 50, and they were the most enthusiastically fabulous old ladies.
