Projekt Revolution Part 1

Aug 31, 2007 17:32

It's been over a week since the concert and therefore this is very late, but I finished Life of Pi and I want to celebrate by remembering my amazing time.

I went with two friends and my mom. My mom is amazing. She never complained about slowly becoming the Person Carrying the Stuff, bought us liquids (I would have fallen instantly in love with anyone who gave me water at certain points during the day) and took practically all the pictures. She was awesome the whole day and even had a good time.

We got to the venue a little early in order to hit the merch stands, but because of the 10:30 (instead of 11) noise curfew, Madina Lake had already started on the Revolution stage. They were pretty good, a little screamier than I prefer, but still cool. The lead singer climbed the side of the stage and leaped into the crowd.

After buying t-shirts, we sought shade by the railing that separated the lawn from the pavilion and main stage. It was getting hot and we were marveling at the people walking around in head to toe black, tight pants even long sleeve turtlenecks. At first it would have just been uncomfortable, but as the day wore on I seriously wondered how those people did not die.

Back to the parking lot for Saosin. It was the first set that we properly participated in by working our way close to the stage.

  • A very good set. Despite only knowing a few songs, I enjoyed myself.
  • The lead singer told the crowd to form a giant circle mosh that we managed to avoid by stepping back.
  • The moshing continued through the band's ballad of sorts "You're Not Alone" (personally, I think it sounds like a Disney song), which caused the lead singer to stare at the crowd in confusion a few times.

After extracting ourselves from the crowd, we were debating whether or not to just hide in the shade when the lead singer of Mindless Self Indulgence (Jimmy) pretended to ride his microphone stand across the stage like a pony as his grand entrance. We then decided that the stage was where we should be.

Their set was amazing. I had no idea what the words were but I still had a great time. I only managed to take one picture because I was too enthralled to take more.

  • Jimmy's antics included twirling his mic stand (actually a stick) like a baton and pretending to play it like a flute. He stuffed the microphone down his pants and even climbed some speakers and pulled his pants down before jumping back to the stage from the five foot height. Also, in hopes of reducing the number of stupid people by 50%, he demonstrated the proper application of a condom using his finger (saying "hopefully it's bigger than this").
  • He pranced around stage with a battered umbrella saying "this is my goth umbrella to protect me from the dark cloud that follows me every where."
  • Later he talked about how this one song is going to be their "Poison ballad" that will make them and that "we'll all get married and none of you will have to blow anyone for money again!"
  • He demanded a "sacrifice for the gods" in the form of cigarettes which were freely thrown on stage. Picking one up, he proclaimed "God does not want your fucking menthols!" and threw it back. He then put his lit cigarette out on his guitarist's tongue.
  • Pointing to the ramp in the back going up to the stage, he shouted "Who the fuck are those people? Are they VIP? We're in a fucking parking lot! Just keep throwing shit at them and booing, it will make me feel better." Turns out, Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance was back there. He's dating MSI's bassist Lyn-Z.
  • Lyn-Z is fucking awesome. She performs like few bassists do, actually up front, drawing more attention than the guitarist. She's sexy as hell and could bend backwards so far I couldn't believe she was still standing. She has kick-ass legs and a half sleeve of tattoos and went crowd surfing. There may be a bit of drama over her relationship with Gerard, but I say nicely done, I'd make out with her too.

We went to our seats in the pavilion after that. There is no pit area at the venue, the seats just go right up to the stage. The lawn is at a sharp angle to concrete and was slick from rain in the morning. It is basically impossible to mosh or anything, which would cause confusion with the bands later on.

Julien-K was up first on the main stage. They didn't even have an album out, which would be why I had never heard of them. They weren't bad, but they weren't really good, just noise going on. I would forget they were on stage. The crew started dismantling their stage before they even finished. The drummer was going to have his kit taken out from under him. Tight schedule, I guess.

I hate that we missed a chunk of Placebo's set because we were at a completely fruitless raffle. But they were great, Brian Molko is adorable and I'm glad I caught any of their set.

HIM sucked live. I like a few of their songs, but my god, I was going to fall asleep while they were on stage. They didn't move really and didn't say a word to the audience. Yeah, not good.

Up next: Taking Back Sunday, My Chemical Romance and Linkin Park
