There was a school field trip that stranded my class and me in outer space for 20 years. It wasn't bad because we landed someplace with civilization and made it work. I don't know what happened to allow us to leave, but I was on a bus heading home to Indiana. During the drive, I was looking at pictures from our "stay." Pictures including me showed me being around 8 years old, wearing the green shirt with the four wild cats on it [from Brooklyn Zoo?]. It sparked some kind of answer to a question I didn't know. A girl sitting up from was complaining about being gone for 20 years and how her mom must be upset about lost time with her. The bus driver, a kindly older man with a thin face and glasses, talked to her calmly even though she was losing her cool. He asked how her mom was doing - was she bad, doing well, doing good? She said she was doing good enough, and the driver said, "See? Everything's fine." I liked him because he made life seem so simple in so few words. Like, maybe time flying by isn't a big deal if everyone you care about is doing good.
We turned left and were on my street. I wasn't sure if the driver was going to know where to stop. A boy behind me was saying something about having to tell the driver where to stop. I got my backpack on and was ready to yell, "Stop!" if need-be, but he knew where to go. He stopped a little past Uncle Joe's house, but that was fine. As I walked towards the front, I looked at the driver in the mirror and said, "Thank you very much!" I thought he would ask me how my grandpa was or Uncle Joe, but he just began talking to the girl again. PFT.
It was the end of twilight, but I wasn't worried about being out there by myself. A car turned onto the path towards the woods, and in real life that would have concerned me; in the dream, I thought they would be worried about me, a shadow behind their car, running towards the mailbox. I checked the mail and found a flyer and an envelope. Then I began to feel dread, and I'm not sure why. Was it because it was dark, and my house looked dark, and I wasn't sure what to expect once I got there? Was it because I didn't know what I was doing there?
