As controversial as that movie is (and I feel both sides of that controversy personally), it still makes me tear up to see the trailer. Even more remarkable is the strange knowledge that I teach at one of these schools. One of these "superman" schools is my every day, my bread and butter.
I was recently reviewing applications for potential students for next year. These are 5th graders who have 5x more life experience (usually in a bad way) than I have at 30. When I look at the applications (we review them to make sure that students are eligible for the lottery), its amazing to me that this is the baggage of the population that I teach. I just see them as kids.
