As long as I can remember, if 'everyone' is talking about something, I've avoided it like the plague, whether it's a book, a movie, or a graphic novel/comic. There are exceptions to this rule, but generally it holds true: when I read Lord of the Rings the first time, I had never heard of Tolkien or Middle Earth before. Same goes for the Terminator- and Blade Runner-franchises.
