RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUFUS. RUFUS RUFUS RUUUUUUUUUUUFUS. He was MAGNIFICENT and there was MARTHA AND OH GOD I LOVE HER SO MUCH and Rufus played SO MANY songs I'd never heard him do live before and Martha joined him for OODLES of songs and he wore a pink paisley suit and PRETTY MUCH IT WAS PERFECTION.
Except that I couldn't STAND the visual accompaniment to the All Days Are Nights half of the show, that was RUBBISH, but seeing as Rufus didn't design it himself, my love for him remains undiluted.
Strathmore was HILARIOUSLY INEPT, as per their norm.* Because of the venue's rules, if Rufus went past a certain time, he would have to pay a big fine. He decided to push everything back 20 minutes, so Martha came on at 7:40.
UNFORTUNATELY, NO ONE KNEW THIS. The auditorium was MAYBE 1/3 full when she came onstage and although once people REALIZED that the show was starting, they flocked in, there was NO announcement, no warning, NADA. But Martha was SO GOOD and ended with an a cappella, unamplified 'La Vie En Rose' and she was dfjaslfjsadofhaeiojf;aohfosAMAZING MARTHAAAAAAAAAA.
The same thing happened with the second half- ABSOLUTELY no heads-up to signal the end of the intermission, we just suddenly looked inside and saw Rufus taking the stage and starting to play 'Beauty Mark.' It wasn't so bad for me- I didn't REALLY miss anything, I was just walking down to my seat (OH GOD IT WAS FOURTH ROW I COULD SEE EVERYTHING DOWN TO THESE TINY TREMORS IN RUFUS' HANDS WHEN HE FINISHED THE LULU SET AND HELD THEM ABOVE THE KEYS FOR A FEW MOMENTS), but poor Becka had to run back upstairs and probably missed half of it. UGH, if we didn't all desperately want to see and hear every moment, it would be funny, but it was AWFUL and I know there were a LOT of unhappy people.
BUT I AM NOT AMONG THEM BECAUSE THERE WAS RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUFUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. He makes me want to be a better musician in ways I can't describe.
* The ushers were once UTTERLY UNABLE to help my sister find her seat at a concert there. They sent her back and forth and back and forth until she just ignored them and explored for herself.
