thoughts on... DAMMIT I NEVER KNOW THE TITLES ANYMORE

HMMMMMMMMMMMM.

It wasn't bad? There were some cool ideas involved. I started shrieking when the RAF attacked the Dalek ship, and Danny Boy was TOTALLY JACK HARKNESS IN A CLEVERLY DISGUISED VOICE. I refuse to accept otherwise. Therefore, any episode with Captain Jack does perforce rise in my estimation.

Except.

We've ALREADY DONE a Blitz story. And done it better. Admittedly, this was more of a Churchill story than about London herself, but it's DISTRACTING thinking that the Doctor and Rose are running around somewhere. (Jack, as has already been established, IS TOTES THERE AND THAT IS A-OKAY).

ALSO.

I have since learned that, apparently, Taste the Rainbow/Pride Daleks are a Thing of Classic Who. Unfortunately, I assume that all the rest of the relative n00bs found this moment as HILARIOUS as I did. They just KEPT COMING OUT (totally Pride Daleks) in different colors. I imagine that if the scene went any longer, we would have had sparklypink!Dalek, polkadot!Dalek, and my favorite, paisley!Dalek.

Side note- when last I was in Cambridge, I bought a kids novelty Dalek bath set. It had a special Dalek plastic case, Dalek-sponge, and shower gel. I LOVED IT SO MUCH. I think I left it in London. It CONTINUES to break my heart.

Anyway.

I... am unsure how to feel about the implication that Amy has a crush on the Doctor. On the one hand, it feels inevitable from her character- her imaginary friend comes back to her life, he's a goodlooking guy who can show her a good time in his time ship, and she's clearly having doubts about her upcoming marriage. EVERYTHING depends on how they play it out. It is one of my greatest frustrations with the show that Martha- amazing, powerful, brilliant Martha Jones- got SCREWED by writing that turned her into a second-best, unrequited love plot. ARGH. I am obviously going to reserve judgement for a good long while, but I AM APPREHENSIVE, even if it's no longer Rusty in charge. I really, REALLY like Amy and I want her story to do right by her potential.

I am also wondering how it is that the crack arc has become SO obvious. Earlier arcs were subtle as HELL so that when Nine called out all the Bad Wolfs, it was SO AWESOME- the Torchwoods were more explicit, but the bees and the Medusa Cascade were awesome, in my recollection. EVERY EPISODE has ended with a shiny crack as a stinger to the ep- subtlety seems to be no longer the goal. In a way, it's not that surprising- everyone knows now that we want a season-long arc and that there'll be SOMETHING, but I do like having to work for it a bit. WE SHALL SEE.

Turning the robot-bomb human was a bit crap, but I did like that Amy got to the heart of it (heh) in the end- I do love a Companion who can fix things the Doctor can't, and this is two for two for Amy. Ah, Dorabella. I hope you accepted the love of a good Scottish robot.

So yeah- a bit meh, but hey, not every episode can be a total winner. I just got Season 4 DVDs on sale for $20, so I will be rewatching the Pertinent Episodes for next week.
