I walked out about an hour ago to take another look at Steve, still buried under his blanket of snow and tree. I found that there was another car owner trying to assess damage from two cars down from Steve, so I struck up conversation to see what he knew about when they might remove the trees. He'd lost a sideview mirror and the front bumper, but a branch that would have gone straight through his window snapped on the way down. You could see the jagged edge of the branch that stopped right at his windshield, while the branch itself had fallen to the side of his car. Yikes. Together, we took a closer look at Steve, and it looks like he might mostly be ok. I cleared a path to the driver's side windows and peered in, as best I could- it's hard to tell, but there hasn't been any hull breach (if you will). The windshield look intact, but that's mostly judging from the lack of snow on the dash, as they might have cracked when a branch fell.
It looks like it could have been a LOT worse, so I'm pretty thankful. The nice guy (whose name was... Brett? Maybe?) and I started walking around the building, trying to see if anyone else was in a similar tree-situation. There were plenty of fallen trees, but the ones around our building seem to have fallen safely onto the ground- lucky us. We figured out we were both grad students at the university and tried to wager on when we'd even be able to make it over to campus again. He's pretty much going to give up on using his car for the next couple of days, seeing as how the complex is still impenetrable and there's a honking big tree atop his car. We're fine once Metro starts running again, but it's hard to tell when that will be- maybe tomorrow, but maybe not. We finally ran into someone who works four our complex, who said that it would be Monday before they were able to start taking care of fallen trees, so the best thing to do for now would be to take pictures of the car for our insurance companies if there was damage.
Which is actually a nice reminder that I need to pay the last half of my insurance premium, since that's due in a week or so. Here's hoping the mail starts up soon!
STUPID SNOWMAGEDDON. It's very frustrating to not be able to fix anything, to just know that I won't be going anywhere for awhile, no matter what I do. Since there's more snow coming midweek, it seems foolish to even make an effort to start digging out Steve, although I know it would be helpful in the long run. I would be more inclined if there wasn't a freaking TREE lying across him, of course- I can dig all I want, but I can't drive him away until they move that sucker.
As it is, I am frustrated and cranky and I didn't make as much progress as I've wanted on my thesis so far. LE SIGH.
BUT. I am trying to keep in mind the following:
- Steve could have been where Brett's car was. I may have SOME damage, but it's probably not as extensive as his, and definitely not as extensive as it might have been.
- I have had power all through the storm, and I know plenty of people who were not so lucky.
- Roommate C watched out for me yesterday and made me take a break when I really, really needed it.
- I have time to redirect the course of the weekend and can still make good progress.
steve,
some cheese with that wine?
